Solids, both as filterable matter (TDS) and nonfilterable matter (TSS), are important in the treating of raw water and wastewater, and in monitoring of streams. Waste solids impose a suspended and settleable residue in receiving waters. Suspended and soluble materials provide a matrix for some biological slime and, in sufficient quantity, impair respiration of organisms. These solids may create nuisance slime beds and odors while imposing a long-term biological oxidation load over limited receiving water areas. Knowledge of suspended and soluble materials is important in treating raw water supplies. Knowledge of solids loading can aid in determining the type or amount of treatment, or both, necessary to make the water acceptable for use. Such information may also be used to determine acceptability of water after treatment. Too little treatment may not be desirable and excess treatment costs money. Stream monitoring is important for environmental reasons, such as compliance with discharge permits. Stream improvements, water pollution monitoring, mass wasting, algal studies, and sediment loads are but a few of the many reasons streams are monitored.1.1 These test methods cover the determination of filterable matter, total dissolved solids (TDS), and nonfilterable matter, total suspended solids (TSS), in drinking, surface, and saline waters, domestic and industrial wastes. The practical range of the determination of nonfilterable particulate matter (TSS) is 4 to 20 000 mg/L. The practical range of the determination of filterable matter (TDS) is 10 mg/L to 150 000 µg/g. 1.2 Since the results measured by this test are operationally defined, careful attention must be paid to following the procedure as specified. 1.3 The test methods appear in the following order: Filterable Matter (TDS) and Nonfilterable Matter (TSS), mg/LSections 10-14 Total Dissolved Solids High Precision Method, µg/gSections 15-19 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. For a specific hazard statement, see Section 8.

Deposits on heat transfer surfaces reduce efficiency of the heat exchanger affected. A method for easily determining the corrosion and fouling tendency of a particular water under heat transfer conditions will allow the evaluation of changes in the various system variables such as heat flux, flow velocity, metallurgy, cycles-of-concentration, and treatment schemes on heat exchanger performance.1.1 This test method provides directions for fabricating and operating a test apparatus to simultaneously monitor the corrosion and fouling tendency of real and pilot cooling water systems under heat transfer conditions. 1.2 Interpretation of the results of this test method must be left to the investigator. Many variables are involved which may not be easily controlled or fully understood. Variations in design and operating conditions may produce results that are not comparable from unit to unit. 1.3 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are provided for information only. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

5.1 This test method is a fast, cost-effective method that can yield limited isotopic activity levels for 238U and 234U, as well as total uranium activity. Although 232U is incorporated as a tracer, uranium recoveries for this test measured during the developmental work on this test method were usually between 95 and 105%. 5.2 The high-resolution alpha-liquid-scintillation spectrometer offers a constant (99.6 ± 0.1)8201;% counting efficiency and instrument backgrounds as low as 0.001 counts per minute (min–1 ) over a 4 to 7 MeV energy range according to McDowell and McDowell (2). Count rates for extractive scintillator blanks and reagent blanks usually range from 0.01 min–1 to 0.1 min–1. 1.1 This test method covers determining the total soluble uranium activity in drinking water in the range of 0.037 Bq/L (1 pCi/L) or greater by selective solvent extraction and high-resolution alpha-liquid-scintillation spectrometry. The energy resolution obtainable with this technique also allows estimation of the 238U to 234U activity ratio. 1.2 This test method was tested successfully with reagent water and drinking water. It is the user's responsibility to ensure the validity of this test method for waters of untested matrices. 1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. For specific hazard statements, see Section 9.

This European Standard specifies quantitative methods for determining the TON and TFN of waters and also a qualitative method for determining any abnormal odour and/or flavour. It is essential that the safety remarks in Clause 5 are taken into account. Two quantitative methods are described: — a short method applicable when either a sample has no odour and flavour or when the odour and flavour are to be compared with a specified threshold number; — a full method applicable when the threshold number for the sample is to be determined. For both quantitative methods, two different methodologies are described: — unforced choice in the standard; — forced choice in Annex B. Both methods are applicable for quantifying the odour and flavour of drinking water and/or migration waters from materials in contact with waters.

This document describes a method for the determination of suspended solids in raw waters, waste waters and effluents by filtration through glass fibre filters. The lower limit of the determination is about 2 mg/l. No upper limit has been established. Water samples are not always stable which means that the content of suspended solids depends on storage time, means of transportation, pH value and other circumstances. Results obtained with unstable samples need to be interpreted with caution. Floating oil and other immiscible organic liquids will interfere (See Annex A). Samples containing more than about 1000 mg/l of dissolved solids can require special trea

This Standard specifies a method of determining absorption in the UV range as a measure of the total content of dissolved organics in undilued water samples of every kind, including those that are highly coloured orturbid. However, the method does not detect some organic compounds, for example short-chain aliphatics, pure alcohols, pure sugar, etc. lf the sample contains not only truly dissolved, but also undissolved substances, the measurement does notyield the spectral absorption,α(λ),but the spectral attenuation coefficient μ(λ)(see DIN EN ISO 7027).
