1.1 This specification2 covers a variety of carbon, alloy, and martensitic stainless steel nuts in the size range 1⁄4 through 4 in. and metric M12 through M100 nominal. It also covers austenitic stainless steel nuts in the size range 1⁄4 in. and M12 nominal and above. These nuts are intended for high-pressure or high-temperature service, or both. Grade substitutions without the purchaser’s permission are not allowed. 1.2 Bars from which the nuts are made shall be hot-wrought. The material may be further processed by centerless grinding or by cold drawing. Austenitic stainless steel may be solution annealed or annealed and strain-hardened. When annealed and strain hardened austenitic stainless steel is ordered in accordance with Supplementary Requirement S1, the purchaser should take special care to ensure that 8.2.2, Supplementary Requirement S1, and Appendix X1 are thoroughly understood. 1.3 Supplementary requirements of an optional nature are provided. These shall apply only when specified in the inquiry, contract, and order. 1.4 This specification is expressed in both inch-pound units and in SI units. However, unless the order specifies the applicable “M” specification designation (SI units), the material shall be furnished to inch-pound units. 1.5 The values stated in either inch-pound units or SI units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard. Within the text, the SI units are shown in brackets. 1.6 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

This document specifies the mechanical and physical properties of nuts made of non-alloy steel or alloy steel, when tested at the ambient temperature range of 10 °C to 35 °C. This document applies to nuts: — with ISO metric thread (see ISO 68-1), — with diameter/pitch combinations according to ISO 261 and ISO 262, — with coarse pitch thread M5 to M39, and fine pitch thread M8×1 to M39×3, — with thread tolerances according to ISO 965-1, ISO 965-2 or ISO 965-5, — with specified property classes 04, 05, 5, 6, 8, 10 and 12 including proof load, — of three different nut styles (see 5.1): regular nuts (style 1), high nuts (style 2) and thin nuts (style 0), — with a minimum outside diameter or width across flats s ≥ 1,45D, — able to mate with bolts, screws and studs with property classes in accordance with ISO 898-1 (see Annex B), and — intended to be used in applications ranging from –50 °C to +150 °C, or up to +300 °C. WARNING — Nuts conforming to the requirements of this document are tested at the ambient temperature range of 10 °C to 35 °C and are used in applications ranging from –50 °C to +150 °C; however, these nuts are also used outside this range and up to +300 °C for specific applications. It is possible that they do not retain the specified mechanical and physical properties at lower and/or elevated temperatures. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the user to determine the appropriate choices based on the service environment conditions of the assembly (see also 7.1). For additional specifications applicable to hot dip galvanized nuts, see ISO 10684. For nuts designed for particular applications, see ISO/TR 16224. This document does not specify requirements for functional properties such as: — prevailing torque properties (see ISO 2320), — torque/clamp force properties (see ISO 16047 for test method), — weldability, or — corrosion resistance.

1.1 This specification establishes allowable limits for the various types of surface discontinuities that may occur during the manufacture and processing of metric-series nuts with nominal diameters 5 mm and larger and inch-series nuts with nominal diameters 1⁄4 in. and larger. 1.2 The values stated in either SI (metric) or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system are not exact equivalents; therefore, each system must be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with the specification. 1.3 When the engineering requirements of the application necessitate control of surface discontinuities on nuts, the purchaser shall specify conformance to this ASTM specification in the original inquiry and purchase order. 1.3.1 When the engineering requirements of the application necessitate that surface discontinuities on nuts be controlled within limits closer than those specified in this specification, the purchaser shall specify the applicable limits in the original inquiry and purchase order. 1.4 The allowable limits established in this specification for metric nuts, with nominal diameters 5 to 24 mm inclusive, are essentially identical with requirements given in ISO/ DIS 6157 ⁄II. There are no ISO standards for surface discontinuities on metric-series nuts with nominal diameters larger than 24 mm or on any inch-series nuts. 1.5 The following precautionary caveat pertains only to the test method portion, Section 7, of this specification: This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.6 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

1.1 This specification2 covers chemical and mechanical requirements for eleven grades of carbon and alloy steel nuts for general structural and mechanical uses on bolts, studs, and other externally threaded parts. NOTE 1—See Appendix X1 for guidance on suitable application of nut grades. 1.2 The requirements for any grade of nut may, at the supplier’s option, and with notice to the purchaser, be fulfilled by furnishing nuts of one of the stronger grades specified herein unless such substitution is barred in the inquiry and purchase order. 1.3 Terms used in this specification are defined in Terminology F1789 unless otherwise defined herein. 1.4 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system are not necessarily exact equivalents; therefore, to ensure conformance with the standard, each system shall be used independently of the other, and values from the two systems shall not be combined. 1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

1   Scope This document specifies mechanical and physical properties of flat washers, designed to be used in bolted joints in combination with bolts, screws, studs and nuts with a specified property class in accordance with ISO 898‑1 and ISO 898‑2. NOTE 1 These types of washers can also be used with other fasteners such as screws forming their own mating thread. Washers that conform to the requirements of this document are evaluated at an ambient temperature range of 10 °C to 35 °C. They might not retain the specified mechanical and physical properties at elevated temperatures and/or lower temperatures. NOTE 2 Washers conforming to the requirements of this document are used in applications ranging from −50 °C to +150 °C. Users are advised to consult an experienced fastener expert for temperatures outside this range and up to a maximum temperature of +300 °C when determining appropriate choices, or for critical applications. This document is applicable to the following flat captive and non-captive washers made of carbon steel or alloy steel, with thickness from 0,2 mm to 12 mm: — plain washers (with or without knurls, ribs or chamfers); — square washers; — square hole washers; — shaped plates. It does not specify requirements for the following properties:
