This part of IEC 62021 describes the procedure for the determination of the acidity of unused and used electrical mineral insulating oils. NOTE 1 In unused and used mineral insulating oils, the constituents that may be considered to have acidic characteristics include organic acids, phenolic compounds, some oxidation products, resins, organometallic salts and additives. The method may be used to indicate relative changes that occur in a mineral insulating oil during use under oxidizing conditions regardless of the colour or other properties of the resulting mineral oil. The acidity can be used in the quality control of unused mineral oil. As a variety of oxidation products present in used mineral oil contribute to acidity and these products vary widely in their corrosion properties, the test cannot be used to predict corrosiveness of a mineral oil under service conditions. NOTE 2 The acidity results obtained by this test method may or may not be numerically the same as those obtained by colorimetric methods, but they are generally of the same magnitude.

This International Standard gives guidance on the supervision and maintenance of the quality of the insulating oil in electrical equipment. This standard is applicable to mineral insulating oils, originally supplied conforming to IEC 60296, in transformers, switchgear and other electrical apparatus where oil sampling is reasonably practicable and where the normal operating conditions specified in the equipment specifications apply. This standard is also intended to assist the power equipment operator to evaluate the condition of the oil and maintain it in a serviceable condition. It also provides a common basis for the preparation of more specific and complete local codes of practice. The standard includes recommendations on tests and evaluation procedures and outlines methods for reconditioning and reclaiming oil and the decontamination of oil contaminated with PCBs. NOTE The condition monitoring of electrical equipment, for example by analysis of dissolved gases, furanic compounds or other means, is outside the scope of this standard.

This technical report offers a test method for the classification of mineral insulating oils as either paraffinic or naphthenic, by means of low-temperature differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). For the purpose of this technical report, the typical operating temperature range extends from –100 °C to +100 °C. The temperature range can be extended, depending upon the instrumentation used. The method is applicable to mineral insulating oils obtained from petroleum crudes. It may be also applied to mineral oils containing pour point depressants, as these additives do not prevent the formation of paraffin crystals but only the growing of such micro-crystals.

This technical report gives guidance for the interpretation of dissolved gas analysis (DGA) which has been developed for bushings, in service, where the main insulation (generally paper) is impregnated with mineral insulating oil according to IEC 60296. This technical report is applicable to oil-filled and impregnated paper bushings in service. Until further experience has been gained, the methods should be applied with caution in relation to other materials, e.g. synthetic hydrocarbons based on dodecylbenzene, according to IEC 60867. The indication obtained by the interpretation of a dissolved gas analysis of an oil sample taken out of a bushing should be viewed as a guide and any resulting action should be undertaken with proper engineering judgement.

This standard deals with the determination of the aromatic hydrocarbon content of new mineral insulating oils. Two methods are proposed: — Infrared spectrophotometric analysis This method is recommended as a quality control and acceptance test for mineral insulating oils. It uses the relationship between the absorbance at 1 610 cm- 1 and the n-d-M analysis * to determine the proportion of the total carbon atoms present in aromatic ring structures. The conversion factor derived from this relationship is applicable to oils with a molecular mass in the range 290 to 500 and with an aromatic carbon content in the range 1.2 % to 60%. — Adsorption chromatographic analysis This method describes the measurement of the percentage by mass of polar compounds and compounds containing at least one aromatic ring per molecule present in low molecular mass mineral insulating oils.

The purpose of this guide is to assist the power equipment operator in evaluating askarels in transformers, reactors and accessory equipment operated at power frequencies and in his efforts to maintain askarels in serviceable condition. It recommends standardized tests and evaluation procedures. Methods are outlined for reconditioning and reclaiming askarels whenever necessary. Precautions are also outlined for the disposal of unserviceable askarels in order to prevent environmental pollution. Local regulations should be followed.

1.1 This method uses the change of electrical and/or chemical characteristics of transformer askarel to eliminate those materials which are not suitable due to their contaminating effect on the askarel. Delayed or long time contamination effects may not be detected. 1.2 This method also utilizes various physical tests on the electrical insulation and construction materials after controlled exposure to the askarel to eliminate those materials which are not suitable for further consideration. 1.3 This method is not suitable for the complete evaluation of the compatibility of insulating and structural materials with the askarels for any given application.

1.1 This standard covers specifications and test methods for unused mineral insulating oils, as delivered, intended for use in cables with oil ducts. These include hollow core cables, pipe type cables and any others in which provision is made for the oil to flow. Oils concerned are obtained by distillation and refining of petroleum. Oils with and without additives are within the scope of this standard. 1.2 This standard does not apply to mineral insulating oils used in transformers, switchgear, capacitors and similar equipment or to hydrocarbon insulating liquids obtained by synthesis. 1.3 For the purposes of this standard three grades of oil are considered: class I, class II and class Ill, based on the values of certain physical properties namely: viscosity, flash-point and pour-point.

The potentiometric method uses an endpoint at pH 11,3 to ensure titration of all species, whereas the colourimetric methods uses an indicator changing colour at approximately pH 9,5. This may lead to slightly higher results for oils with acidities above 0,3 mg KOH/g oil when using the potentiometric method.

This technical report describes a test procedure to measure the pa rtial discharge inception voltage (PDIV). It is one of a group of methods which have been recently developed to describe the behaviour of insulating liquids when subjected to high electrical stress. The method is applicable to all types of insulating liquids used in medium and high voltage equipment. Nevertheless the equipment described in this repo rt may not be adapted to liquids with values of PDIV greater than 70 kV (see annex A). Complementary information may be obtained by the gassing properties (IEC 628) and the lightning impulse breakdown voltage (IEC 897) in addition to the widely used measurement of electric strength (IEC 156).

IEC 62021-3:2014 describes two procedures for the determination of the acidity of unused and used electrical non-mineral insulating oils. Method A is potentiometric titration and Method B is colourimetric titration. The method may be used to indicate relative changes that occur in non-mineral insulating oil during use under oxidizing conditions regardless of the colour or other properties of the resulting non-mineral oil. The acidity can be used in the quality control of unused non-mineral insulating oil. As a variety of oxidation products present in used non-mineral insulating oil contribute to acidity and these products vary widely in their corrosion properties, the test cannot be used to predict corrosiveness of non-mineral insulating oil under service conditions.
