This part of IEC 61292, which is a technical report, applies to all commercially available optical amplifiers (OAs), including optical fibre amplifiers (OFAs) using active fibres, as well as Raman amplifiers. Semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) using semiconductor gain media are also included. This technical report provides a simple informative guideline on the threshold of high optical power that causes high-temperature damage of fibre. Also discussed is optical safety for manufacturers and users of optical amplifiers by reiterating substantial parts of existing standards and agreements on eye and skin safety. To identify the maximum permissible optical power in the optical amplifier from damage-free and safety viewpoints, this technical report identifies the following values: a) the optical power limit that causes thermal damage to the fibre, such as fibre fuse and fibre-coat burning; b) the maximum permissible exposure (MPE) to which the eyes/skin can be exposed without consequential injury; c) the optical power limit in the fibre that causes MPE on the eyes/skin after free-space propagation from the fibre; d) the absolute allowable damage-free and safe level of optical power of the optical amplifier by comparing (a) and (c). The objective of this technical report is to minimize potential confusion and misunderstanding in the industry that might cause unnecessary alarm and hinder the progress and acceptance of advancing optical amplifier technologies and markets. It is important to point out that the reader should always refer to the latest international standards and agreements because the technologies concerned are rapidly evolving. The present technical report will be frequently reviewed and will be updated by incorporating the results of various studies related to OAs and OA-supported optical systems in a timely manner.

This Technical Report presents general information about polarization mode dispersion (PMD), related to the application of the two commonly used methods to test PMD in OAs, the Jones matrix eigenanalysis (JME) and the Poincaré sphere analysis (PSA), which have been demonstrated to be formalistically equivalent [4,5]2). This report is complementary to the International Standards describing the JME procedure (IEC 61290-11-1) and the PSA procedure (IEC 61290-11-2).

This part of IEC 60268 applies to analogue amplifiers, and the analogue parts of analogue/digital amplifiers, which form part of a sound system for professional or household applications. This does not exclude the use of other methods which give equivalent results. In general, the methods are based on the simplest measuring equipment which can provide useful results. This does not exclude the use of more complex equipment which can give higher accuracy and/or allow automatic measurement and recording of results. Rated conditions and standard measuring conditions are specified in order to allow measurements to be reliably repeated.

CEA-2006-B defines characteristics that, considered collectively, describe the performance of power amplifiers designed for use in mobile applications. Power amplifiers designed for use in mobile applications include, but are not limited to: separate single and multi-channel amplifiers, integrated amplifiers and bandwidth-limited amplifiers that are connected to and rely solely on the vehicle's primary electrical system for power input and have output power ratings of greater than 5 watts when measurement in accordance with CEA-2006-B.

The purpose of this specification is to recommend mechanical and electrical standards for broadband radio frequency (RF) devices whose primary purpose is to amplify signals presented to an input port and deliver the amplified signals to one or more output ports. The devices are also required to pass signals in a different range of frequencies in the return direction and, optionally, may provide amplification of such return signals. The specification's scope is limited to 75ohm devices whose ports are provided with F connectors. The most common use for such devices is on-premises RF signal distribution.
