This SAE Recommended Practice describes a method to be used when performing linear impact testing for the benchmarking of Passenger Airbag (PAB) modules. The results obtained from the linear impact tests will be used to verify design requirements and/ or specifications, and for other engineering purposes such as module performance comparisons, and/ or correlation to CAE models. The objective of this testing is to obtain the loading and unloading elastic slopes and the plastic limit for the passenger airbag module. The purpose for this procedure is to describe recommended test methods to ensure, to the extent possible, reliable and reproducible test results. Performance limits or acceptance criteria are not established as they are typically defined based on specific vehicle design requirements and/or manufacturer specifications. It is intended to be a general procedure for repetitive testing and suggests only general guidelines for the safe conduct of tests and reliable data correlation.

This Regulation applies to: (a) Vehicles of categories M1 and N 1/ with regard to the strength of seats and their anchorages and with regard to their head restraints; (b) Vehicles of categories M2 and M3 1/ with regard to seats not covered by Regulation No. 80, in respect of the strength of seats and their anchorages, and in respect of their head restraints; (c) Vehicles of category M1 with regard to the design of the rear parts of seat backs and the design of devices intended to protect the occupants from the danger resulting from the displacement of luggage in a frontal impact. It does not apply to vehicles with regard to folding, side-facing or rearward-facing seats, or to any head restraint fitted to these seats.

This SAE Recommended Practice describes a method to collect, identify, and quantify effluent resulting from depliyment of in-vehicle stored energy restraint systems. Deployment and collection is completed in a 2.83 m3 (100 ft3) chamber. This procedure is written as a guideline for the identification and quantification of both particulate effluent (size, concentration, and composition) and gaseous effluent (concentration and composition). The intent of this procedure is to describe and recommend testing methods and not to establish limits for the effluent. This procedure should be used in conjunction with performance specifications from the customer and/or manufacturer of the device(s) being tested. This is a general procedure for repetitive and comparative testing, and suggests only general guidelines for the safe conduct of tests and reliable data correlation.

The scope of this SAE Recommended Practice is to establish uniform test procedures for passenger cars, to determine whether the system is defined as a defroster or defogger, and to establish minimum performance requirements for each system. A defroster for purposes of this practice is a system which will remove moisture and/or frost from the interior surface of the backlight at -18 degrees C. A defogger is a system which will remove moisture and/or fog from the interior surface of the backlight at 4 degrees C. The test procedure is intended to simulate actual conditions by utilizing either a cold room with an appropriate device to introduce air flow over the backlight or a sufficiently large wind tunnel with ambient temperature control. The test procedure and the minimum performance requirements are based on currently available engineering data.
