This document specifies the requirements for forged eye hooks with point and latch of grade 4 from stainless steel and solution annealed for use preferably as a component in chain slings of welded construction of grade 4 from stainless steel and solution annealed. IMPORTANT — For other applications, e.g. steel wire rope slings or textile slings, it is important that the hook design is checked to ensure its fitness for a safe use. NOTE 1 The grade for the hook according to this document is taken from the grade of the sling chain according according to Table 2 and values for the mechanical requirements according to Table 3. Thus, the direct correlation of hooks to the sling chain is given by the WLL and especially the code system on the product body itself. The grade of the hook does not define any values of the tensile strength of the hook material. For further information, see Annex B. The range of the nominal diameter, dn, of the associated sling chain according to ISO 1835 is from 4 mm to 22 mm. Hooks according to this document are for use in the temperature range –100 °C to +400 °C. These hooks are solution annealed in the finished condition and can therefore be used without restrictions with regard to the corrosion resistance of the steels according to 5.1. NOTE 2 The term “eye hook with point and latch” is taken from ISO 1837:2003, Figure 5.

ISO 4309:2017 establishes general principles for the care and maintenance, and inspection and discard of steel wire ropes used on cranes and hoists. In addition to guidance on storage, handling, installation and maintenance, this document provides discard criteria for those running ropes which are subjected to multi-layer spooling, where both field experience and testing demonstrate that deterioration is significantly greater at the crossover zones on the drum than at any other section of rope in the system. It also provides more realistic discard criteria covering decreases in rope diameter and corrosion, and gives a method for assessing the combined effect of deterioration at any position in the rope. ISO 4309:2017 is applicable to those ropes used on the following types of cranes, the majority of which are defined in ISO 4306‑1: a) cable and portal cable cranes; b) cantilever cranes (pillar jib, wall or walking); c) deck cranes; d) derrick and guy derrick cranes; e) derrick cranes with rigid bracing; f) floating cranes; g) mobile cranes; h) overhead travelling cranes; i) portal or semi-portal bridge cranes; j) portal or semi-portal cranes; k) railway cranes; l) tower cranes; m) offshore cranes, i.e. cranes mounted on a fixed structure supported by the sea bed or on a floating unit supported by buoyancy forces. ISO 4309:2017 applies to rope on cranes, winches and hoists used for hook, grabbing, magnet, ladle, excavator or stacking duties, whether operated manually, electrically or hydraulically. It also applies to rope used on hoists and hoist blocks. NOTE In view of the fact that the exclusive use of synthetic sheaves or metal sheaves incorporating synthetic linings is not recommended when single-layer spooling at the drum, due to the inevitability of wire breaks occurring internally in large numbers before there is any visible evidence of any wire breaks or signs of substantial wear on the periphery of the rope, no discard criteria are given for this combination.

ISO/TR 21704:2017 contains investigations and investigation results on toughness of round steel link chains, tested with sub-size specimens. It applies to round steel link chains for hand operated chain hoists of grade TH and VH and for sling chains used for chain slings of grade 8. NOTE 1 Associated International Standards are ISO 16877, ISO 16872 and ISO 3076. In future it is intended to implement the results on toughness derived in this document in new standards. Eleven steels, provided by four manufacturers, were tested to find a test regime on sub-size specimens and requirements on the notch impact toughness values at design temperature which resulted out of the tests. These requirements are adjusted to the toughness values of full size ISO-V specimens. NOTE 2 The requirements are also valid for other cross sections of the chain than round.
