This coulometric method is for determining water dissolved in liquid hydrocarbons, including sulfolane and the Carom process solvent. The method is generally applicable to traces of water, but can also be applied to mass-% levels. The lower limit of quantitation is 3 mass-ppm, but values below 10 mass-ppm are considered semi-quantitative. Common interferences include: aldehydes, ketones and mercaptans (see NOTE). ASTM D 1364, a volumetric Karl Fischer method, is generally used for samples containing greater than 7 mass-% water. Since accurate measurement of water content in liquid hydrocarbons is primarily dependent on the ability to obtain and keep representative samples, the on-line technique described in UOP Method 344 is recommended, when applicable.
Water in Liquid Hydrocarbons by Coulometry
This method is for determining total mercury in liquid hydrocarbons using a Nippon Instruments Corporation (NIC) Mercury Analyzer. The method may be applied to samples containing 0.1 to 10,000 ng/mL (m/v-ppb). The results can be converted to mass-ppb. The APPENDIX contains a procedure, Determination of Mercury Species in Hydrocarbons, which can be used to differentiate between elemental mercury, organic non-ionic mercury and ionic (both inorganic and organic) mercury species.
Total Mercury and Mercury Species in Liquid Hydrocarbons
This method is for determining basic organic nitrogen in petroleum distillates. This method may be applied to both colored and clear samples with no difficulty. The range of detection for petroleum distillates is from 0.0001 to 1.0 mass-% nitrogen, while for viscous materials, such as heavy oils, the range is 0.001 to 5.00 mass-% nitrogen. This method may give erroneous results for materials containing bases other than nitrogen compounds (e.g., caustic-washed distillates containing sodium soaps, or crude oil containing inorganic bases). Clear or very lightly colored samples may be analyzed from 0.1 to 1.0 mass-ppm by UOP Method 313.
Nitrogen Bases in Hydrocarbons by Potentiometric Titration
This method is for determining aromatic, olefinic and saturated hydrocarbons by column chromatography in petroleum distillates that boil below 250°C. Depentanization of the sample by UOP 79 is required if it contains more than 2 LV-% C4 or 15 LV-% C5 hydrocarbons. Kerosine boiling range samples should be analyzed by UOP Method 501 or ASTM D 1319. The lower detection limit for a hydrocarbon type is 0.4 LV-%. The indicated aromatic hydrocarbons can include some diolefins, aromatic olefins, compounds containing sulfur and nitrogen or higher boiling oxygenated compounds. Oxygenated gasoline blending components such as methanol, ethanol or methyl-tert-butyl ether do not interfere with the determination of hydrocarbon types. The oxygenated components are not detected, since they elute with the alcohol desorbent. When samples containing oxygenated blending components are analyzed, the hydrocarbon type results can be reported on an oxygenate-free basis or, the oxygenated blending components can be determined by ASTM Method D 4815 and the results corrected to a total sample basis.
Hydrocarbon Types by Fluorescent Indicator Adsorption (FIA)
This method is for determining aromatic, olefinic and saturated hydrocarbons in distillate fuels having viscosities in the range of 1.5 to 5.5 mm2/s (cSt) at 40°C, boiling in the range of 150-400°C (300-750°F). Hydrocarbons boiling in the kerosine range are an exception and should be analyzed by ASTM D 1319 or UOP Method 311.The indicated aromatic hydrocarbons include some diolefins and compounds containing sulfur, oxygen or nitrogen if these are present in the sample being analyzed.
