This International Standard describes methods for the iden-tification of the polymer or the blend of polymers in raw rubbers and in vulcanized or unvulcanized compounds from the gas chromatographic patterns of their pyrolysis products (pyro-grams). Three methods are described, as follows: a) method A, which may be used for all rubbers to deter-mine the nature of the polymer or polymers present; the method will be easiest to apply in the case of single polymers; b) method B, which is particularly useful for determining the nature of the polymers present in blends, and is recom-mended for use when method A is not successful ; c) method C, which is used only if method A indicates the presence of styrene-butadiene copolymers or if method B indicates the presence of 2-vinylcyclohexene and styrene peaks in the pyrogram, and it is required to determine whether polybutadiene is present as well as styrene-butadiene copolymers. The use of the methods described in this International Standard presupposes sufficient working knowledge of the principles and techniques of gas chromatography to be able to carry out the operations described and to interpret the results correctly.

1 This International Standard specifies a method for the identification of rubber polymers, based on infra-red spectrometric examination of both pyrolysis products (pyrolysates) and of films cast from solutions. Typical spectra can be found in the annex. The use of attenuated total reflectance infra-red spectroscopy is not included. 2 The principle of the method implies that sample preparation, and preparation and analysis of the infra-red spectra, have to be carried out by experienced personnet and that the equipment used for the production of the spectra has to be operated according to the manufacturer's instructions for optimum performance. No details for the operation of infra-red spectrometers are included, however, in this International Standard. 3 The method specified is not intended for quantitative analysis.

This part of ISO 6528 specifies a sodium peroxide fusion method for the determination of the total sulfur content of rubber. This method is applicable for the determination of all the sulfur present in a rubber or rubber product, including that contained in barium sulfate which may be used as a filler. It is applicable to NR, CR, SBR, BR, IR, EPDM, NBR and ebonite.1)

This part of ISO 6101 specifies a flame atomic absorption spectrometric method for the determination of the zinc content of rubbers. The method is applicable to products having zinc contents in the range 0,1 to 3,0 % (m/m). Zinc contents outside this range may be determined, provided that suitable adjustments are made to the mass of the test portion and to the concentra-tions of the solutions used.

This part of ISO 6528 specifies an oxygen combustion flask method for the determination of the total sulfur content of rubber. The method is applicable for the determination of all the sulfur present in a rubber or rubber product, except that contained in barium sulfate. It is applicabie to NR, CR, SBR, BR, IR, IIR, EPDM, NBR and ebonite1). This method gives unreliable (usually low) results in the presence of lead, antimony, barium and calcium compounds. If calcium carbonate is the only calcium compound present, good results can be obtained by modifying the absorbing solution.

1 This International Standard specifies three methods for the determination of ash from raw rubbers, compounded rubbers and vulcanizates. The methods are applicable to raw, compounded or vulcanized rubbers of the M, N, O, R and U families described in ISO ,1629, except as restricted in 1.2 and 1.3 below. This International Standard does not cover the interpretation of the ash results as to the inorganic chemical content of a compound or vulcanizate. This is the résponsibility of the analyst, who must be aware of the behaviour of rubber additives at elevated temperatures. 2 Methods A and B should not be used for the determination of ash from compounded or vulcanized rubbers containing chlorine, bromine or iodine. 3 Method C should not be used for raw rubbers. 4 Lithium and fluorine compounds react with silica crucibles to form volatile compounds, giving low ash results. Platinum crucibles shall be used for ashing fluorine-containing and lithium polymerized rubbers. 5 The three methods of ashing do not give identical results in all cases, and it is necessary to state in the test report the method of ashing employed.

1 This International Standard specifies two methods, a hot-mill method and an oven method, for the determination of moisture and other volatile matter content in raw rubbers. 2 These methods are suitable for the determination of the volatile matter content in the "R"1) group of rubbers listed in ISO 1629. They may also be used for other rubbers, but in these cases it is necessary to prove that the change in mass is due solely to loss of original volatile matter and not to rubber degradation. 3 The hot-mill method is not applicable to natural and synthetic isoprene rubbers or to rubbers too difficult to handle on a hot mill. 4 The two test methods do not necessarily give identical results. Therefore, in case of dispute the oven method shall be the reference method. 5 The variation to the oven method specified in 5.2.4 is applicable only to visually graded natural rubber, marketed in bales, coated with a powder (for example tale, kaolin, whiting) by application of a bale coating solution.

This International Standard specifies a pyrolytic method for the determination of the carbon black content of vulcanizates of the following polymers : Natural rubber Synthetic polyisoprene Polybutadiene Styrene butadiene rubber Butyl rubber Acrylate rubber Ethylene-propylene copolymer Ethylene-propylene terpolymer This method is not suitable for vulcanizates containing halogens or nitrogen in the polymer or for those containing certain compounding materials, such as lead salts or phenolic resins, which cause the formation of a carbona-ceous residue during pyrolysis. The precision of the method may be affected if mineral fillers are present which dissociate at the pyrolysis temperature.
