This International Standard establishes a vocabulary of terms and definitions relevant to the particle characterization of particulate systems. It covers such fields as the representation of results of particle size analysis, the descriptive and quantitative representation of particle shape and morphology, sample preparation, specific surface area and porosity characterization and measurement methods including sedimentation, classification, acoustic methods, laser diffraction, dynamic light scattering, single particle light interaction methods, differential electrical mobility analysis and image analysis, in a size scale from nanometre to millimetre.

This Technical Specification describes methods of measuring temperature, injected current dependence and lasing spectral line width in relation to semiconductor lasers for sensing applications. This Technical Specification is applicable to all kinds of semiconductor lasers, such as edge-emitting type and vertical cavity surface emitting type lasers, bulk-type and (strained) quantum well lasers, and quantum cascade lasers, used for optical sensing in e.g. industrial, medical and agricultural fields. This Technical Specification is an application of ISO 13695, in which the physical bases are explained.

This Technical Report addresses the stability characterization of liquid dispersions (suspensions, emulsions, foams and mixtures thereof) for applications, such as new product design, optimization of existing products, quality control during processing and during usage of the product. The stability of a dispersion in the sense of this Technical Report is defined in terms of the change in one or more physical properties over a given time period. Stability can be either monitored (determined) in real time or predicted on the basis of physical quantities related to stability. In the case of very stable dispersions, procedures that accelerate the changes under consideration or accelerated aging tests administered over a shorter time scale can be appropriate. Shelflife can be estimated based on the observed rate of the change in the physical property and the user-required specifications for the product. Guidelines are given for choosing relevant measurements that can be used for the ranking, identification and quantification of instability.

This Technical Specification lists fundamental characteristics which are commonly determined for nanoparticles in powder form. The Technical Specification prescribes specific measurement methods for each of these characteristics. This Technical Specification does not specify acceptable quantitative criteria for the characteristics because they are subject to agreement between sellers, buyers, and regulators. Excluded in this Technical Specification are characteristics specifically related to health, safety, and environmental issues, as well as characteristics that pertain to specific applications of nanoparticles in powder form.
