This part of ISO 10846 explains the principles underlying ISO 10846 2, ISO 10846-3, ISO 10846-4 and ISO 10846-5 for determining the transfer properties of resilient elements from laboratory measurements and provides assistance in the selection of the appropriate part of this series. It is applicable to resilient elements that are used to reduce a) the transmission of audio frequency vibrations (structure-borne sound, 28 Hz to 20 kHz) to a structure which may, for example, radiate fluid-borne sound (airborne, waterborne, or other), and b) the transmission of low-frequency vibrations (typically 1 Hz to 80 Hz), which may, for example, act upon human subjects or cause damage to structures of any size when the vibration is too severe. The data obtained with the measurement methods, which are outlined in this part of ISO 10846 and further detailed in ISO 10846-2, ISO 10846-3, ISO 10846-4 and ISO 10846-5, can be used for -- product information provided by manufacturers and suppliers, -- information during product development, quality controL, and -- calculation of the transfer of vibrations through resilient elements. The conditions for the validity of the measurement methods are a) linearity of the vibrational behaviour of the resilient elements (this includes elastic elements with non-linear static load-deflection characteristics, as long as the elements show approximate linearity for vibrational behaviour for a given static preload), and b) the contact interfaces of the vibration isolator with the adjacent source and receiver structures can be considered as point contacts.

This part of ISO 10846 specifies a method for determining the dynamic transfer stiffness for translations of resilient supports, under specified preload. The method concerns the laboratory measurement of vibrations on the input side and blocking output forces and is called "the direct method" The method is applicable to test elements with parallel flanges (see Figure 1). Resilient elements, which are the subject of this part of ISO 10848. are those which are used to reduce the transmission of vibration in the lower part of the audible frequency range (typically 20 Hz to 500 Hz) to a structure which may, for example, radiate unwanted fluid-borne sounri (airborne, waterborne or others), and the transmission of low-frequency vibrations (typically 1 Hz to 80 Hz), which may, for example, act upon human subjects or cause damage to structures of any size when vibration is too severe. NOTE I In practice, the size of tbe available test rig(s) can restrict the use of very small or very large resilient supports NOTE 2 Samples of continuous supports of strips and mats are included in this method. Whether or not the sample describes the behaviour of the complex system sufficiently is the responsibility of the user of this part o1 I SO 10846 Measurements for translations normal and transverse to the flanges are covered in this purl of ISO 10846. The direct method covers the frequency range from 1 Hz up to a frequency/UL, which is usually determined by the test rig NOTE 3 Because of the large vadety of test rigs and test elements,/UL is variable In this part o1 ISO 10846, the adequacy of the test rig is not defined for a fixed frequency range, but on the basis of measured data, as described in 61 to 6.4.

This part of ISO 3382 specifies methods for the measurement of reverberation time in ordinary rooms. It describes the measurement procedure, the apparatus needed, the required number of measurement positions, and the method for evaluating the data and presenting the test report. The measurement results can be used for correction of other acoustic measurements, e.g. sound pressure level from sound sources or measurements of sound insulation, and for comparison with requirements for reverberation time in rooms.

The term "damping" as used in this Standard is restricted to those properties of a material that are related to the process of cyclic energy dissipation during harmonic vibration. This definition specifically excludes: energy transfer devices such as dynamic absorbers; external damping processes such as viscous damping, air-damping, or acoustic radiation; and energy dissipation during transient or random vibration. This standard presents the preferred nomenclature (parameters, symbols, definitions, and mathematical expressions) for specifying the damping properties of uniform materials and uniform specimens, where "uniform" implies homogeneity on a macroscopic scale. For reference purposes, certain non-standard damping parameters are discussed in Annex A. Also included is a classification of damping test parameters (Annex B). The primary purpose for this standard is to improve communications among the many technological fields concerned with material damping.

This International Standard • specifies a method of determining the total emitted acoustic power of ultrasonic transducers based on the use of a radiation force balance; • establishes general principles for the use of radiation force balances in which an obstacle (target) intercepts the sound field to be measured; • establishes limitations of the radiation force method related to cavitation and temperature rise; • establishes quantitative limitations of the radiation force method in relation to diverging and focused beams; • provides information on assessment of overall measurement uncertainties. This International Standard is applicable to: • the measurement of ultrasonic power up to 1 W based on the use of a radiation force balance in the frequency range from 0,5 MHz to 25 MHz; • the measurement of ultrasonic power up to 20 W based on the use of a radiation force balance in the frequency range 0,75 MHz to 5 MHz; • the measurement of total ultrasonic power of transducers, preferably with well-collimated beams; • the use of radiation force balances of the gravimetric type or force feedback type. NOTE The titles of all publications referred to in this Standard are listed in the Bibliography.

This American National Standard establishes the requirements to promote an appropriate exchange of information regarding the application and selection of isolation for the reduction of vibrations generated by equipment and machines. Therefore, use of this standard can improve communication among engineers, manufacturers and end-users concerned with vibration isolation. It is beyond the scope of this standard to present characteristics of resilient mountings. Rather, it is intended to outline, in standardized form, what data and preliminary technical information should be presented to enable the experienced designer to apply resilient mountings correctly.
