This guide describes approaches which can be used to determine surface sampling strategies before any actual surface sampling occurs. The strategy selection process needs to consider a number of factors, including, but not limited to, purpose for sampling, fitness of the sampling strategy for that purpose, data quality objectives and how the data will be used, ability to execute the selected strategy, and ability of the analytical laboratory (fixed-site or in-field) to analyze the samples once they are collected. For the purposes of sampling, and for the materials sampled, surface sampling strategies are matters of choice. Workplace sampling may be performed for single or multiple purposes. Conflicts may arise when a single sampling strategy is expected to satisfy multiple purposes. Limitations of cost, space, power requirements, equipment, personnel, and analytical methods need to be considered to arrive at an optimum strategy for each purpose. A strategy intended to satisfy multiple purposes will typically be a compromise among several alternatives, and will typically not be optimal for any one purpose. The purpose or purposes for sampling should be explicitly stated before a sampling strategy is selected. Good practice, regulatory and legal requirements, cost of the sampling program, and the usefulness of the results may be markedly different for different purposes of sampling. This guide is intended for those who are preparing to evaluate a workplace environment by collecting samples of metals or metalloids on surfaces, or who wish to obtain an understanding of what information can be obtained by such sampling. This guide cannot take the place of sound professional judgment in development and execution of any sampling strategy. In most instances, a strategy based on a standard practice or method will need to be adjusted due to conditions encountered in the field. Documentation of any professional judgments applied to development or execution of a sampling strategy is essential. This guide should not be used as a stand-alone document to evaluate any given contaminant or chemical species. The surface sampling techniques described in this guide are intended for the determination of metals and metalloids on surfaces, or for the determination of loadings of embedded metallic residues in surface coverings. These techniques may not accurately reflect the transferability or bioavailability of such residues by way of dermal contact or inhalation of resuspended respirable dust.1.1 This guide provides criteria to be used in defining strategies for sampling for metals and metalloids on surfaces for workplace health and safety monitoring or evaluation. 1.2 Guidance provided by this standard is intended for sampling of metals and metalloids on surfaces for subsequent analysis using methods such as atomic spectrometry, mass spectrometry, X-ray fluorescence, or molecular fluorescence. Guidance for evaluation of data after sample analysis is included. 1.3 Sampling for volatile organometallic species (for example, trimethyl tin) is not within the scope of this guide. 1.4 Sampling to determine levels of metals or metalloids on the skin is not within the scope of this guide. 1.5 Sampling for airborne particulate matter is not within the scope of this guide. Guide E1370 provides information on air sampling strategies. 1.6 Where surface sampling is prescribed by law or regulation, this guide is not intended to take the place of any requirements that may be specified in such law or regulation. 1.7 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.8

These test methods are intended to provide reproducible data from which acceptance criteria, design data, and specifications can be developed for basket type rescue litters.1.1 These test methods will enable the user to determine if a rescue litter meets their requirement for strength depending upon their particular applications and methods of use. 1.2 The test methods described in this standard are designed to test several parameters under “manner of use” conditions. 1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to inch-pound units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

This European Standard specifies general requirements for the design and construction of guards provided primarily to protect persons from mechanical hazards. The standard applies primarily to machines which are manufactured after the date of issue of this standard. Attention is drawn to the use of guards to minimise exposure to non-mechanical hazards. The requirements are applicable if fixed and movable guards are used. The standard does not cover those parts of guards which actuate interlocking devices. These are covered in EN 1088. This standard does not provide requirements for special systems relating specifically to mobility and ability to lift loads like rollover protective structures (ROPS) and falling-object protective structures (FOPS).

This part of ISO 13849 provides safety requirements and guidance on the principles for the design and integration of safety-related parts of control systems (SRP/CS), including the design of software. For these parts of SRP/CS, it specifies characteristics that include the performance level required for carrying out safety functions. It applies to SRP/CS, regardless of the type of technology and energy used (electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, etc.), for all kinds of machinery. It does not specify the safety functions or performance levels that are to be used in a particular case. This part of ISO 13849 provides specific requirements for SRP/CS using programmable electronic system(s). It does not give specific requirements for the design of products which are parts of SRP/CS. Nevertheless, the principles given, such as categories or performance levels, can be used. NOTE 1 Examples of products which are parts of SRP/CS: relays, solenoid valves, position switches, PLCs, motor control units, two-hand control devices, pressure sensitive equipment. For the design of such products, it is important to refer to the specifically applicable International Standards, e.g. ISO 13851, ISO 13856-1 and ISO 13856-2. NOTE 2 For the definition of required performance level, see 3.1.24. NOTE 3 The requirements provided in this part of ISO 13849 for programmable electronic systems are compatible with the methodology for the design and development of safety-related electrical, electronic and programmable electronic control systems for machinery given in IEC 62061. NOTE 4 For safety-related embedded software for components with PLr = e see IEC 61508-3-1998, Clause 7. NOTE 5 See also Table 1.

This European Standard defines the health and safety requirements of strip processing lines (see 3.1). This European Standard deals with all significant hazards, hazardous situations and events relevant for strip processing line machinery and equipment, when used as intended and under conditions foreseen by the manufacturer, but also includes foreseeable faults and malfunctions in case of misuse. This European Standard specifies the requirements to ensure the safety of persons which are to be considered and met during the design, assembly, transport, commissioning, operation, maintenance and decommissioning of the equipment. This European Standard applies to: Strip processing lines for treating metal strip: from take-over point (see 3.6) of the entry section (terminal equipment, see 3.2) through the process (processing and terminal equipment, see 3.3 and 3.2) up to the take- over point of the exit section or interface to other lines (terminal equipment). This European Standard does not cover: -- Furnaces in accordance with EN 746-1, EN 746-2 and EN 746-3; -- Dryers and ovens in accordance with EN 1539; -- Coil transporting system before take-over-point at the entry section and after take-over-point at the exit section, e. g., hook conveyors, overhead cranes, fork lift and railway trucks and other vehicles; -- Storage equipment for coils; -- Rolling mill stands (i. e., skin pass and reduction stands) according to prEN 15094;-- Rollshop equipment. If applicable, the safety requirements of those standards mentioned above should be considered. This European Standard is not applicable to strip processing line machinery and equipment, which are manufactured before the date of publication of this standard by CEN.
