This standard describes a test method for the determination of the lower explosion limit of dust clouds in a closed vessel under defined initial conditions of pressure and temperature. This method is not suitable for use with recognised explosives, like gunpowder and dynamite, explosives which do not require oxygen for combustion, pyrophoric substances, or substances or mixtures of substances which may under some circumstances behave in a similar manner. Where any doubt exists about the existence of hazard due to explosive properties, expert advice should be sought.

Inerting is a measure to prevent explosions. By feeding inert gas into a system which is to be protected against an explosion, the oxygen content is reduced below a certain concentration until no explosion can occur. The addition of sufficient inert gas to make any mixture non-flammable when mixed with air (absolute inerting) is only required in rare occasions. The requirements for absolute inerting will be discussed. Inerting may also be used to influence the ignition and explosion characteristics of an explosive atmosphere. The guidance given on inerting is also applicable to prevent an explosion in case of a fire. The following cases are not covered by the guideline:  admixture of an inert dust to a combustible dust;  inerting of flammable atmospheres by wire mesh flame traps in open spaces of vessels and tanks;  fire fighting;  avoiding an explosive atmosphere by exceeding the upper explosion limit of a flammable substance. Inerting which is sufficient to prevent an explosion is not a protective measure to prevent fires, self-ignition, exothermic reactions or a deflagration of dust layers and deposits.

This European Standard specifies the basic requirements of design for the selection of a dust explosion venting protective system. The standard is one of a series including prEN 14797 Explosion venting devices and prEN 14460 Explosion resistant equipment. The three standards together represent the concept of dust explosion venting. To avoid transfer of explosions to other communicating equipment one should also consider applying prEN 15089 Explosion Isolation Systems. This European Standard covers: ? vent sizing to protect an enclosure against the internal pressure effects of a dust explosion; ? flame and pressure effects outside the enclosure; ? recoil forces; ? influence of vent ducts. This European Standard is not intended to provide design and application rules against effects generated by detonation reactions or runaway exothermic reactions. This European Standard does not cover fire risks arising from either materials processed, used or released by the equipment or materials that make up equipment and buildings. This European Standard does not cover the design, construction, testing and certification of explosion venting devices that are used to achieve explosion venting.

This European Technical Report provides guidance on assessing the potential ignition hazard from the inadvertent extraction of energy from electromagnetic fields, propagated from communication, radar or other transmitting antennas to plant where a potentially flammable atmosphere may be present. The frequency range covered by this European Technical Report is 9 kHz to 60 GHz. This European Technical Report does not apply to similar hazards arising from electromagnetic fields generated by other means, such as electric storms, electricity generating installations or other radiating electrical equipment, nor does it apply to any hazard arising within telecommunication or other electronic equipment. NOTE 1 The methods of assessment from 9 GHz to 60 GHz are based on extrapolation of data for frequencies below 9 GHz. NOTE 2 The ignition of dust is not covered in this European Technical Report. This European Technical Report also provides advice on how to mitigate the hazard in cases where the assessment indicates that a hazard may exist. This European Technical Report does not cover the hazards associated with the use of electro-explosive devices (EED) (see CLC/TR 50426), or the biological hazards of exposure to RF fields.

This European Standard describes the basic requirements for the design and application of explosion suppression systems. This European Standard also specifies a method for evaluating the effectiveness and the scale up of explosion suppression systems against defined explosions. It gives the criteria for alternative test apparatus used to undertake explosion suppression efficacy tests and criteria to be applied in defining the safe operating regime of an explosion suppression system. It covers: -- general requirements for explosion suppression components; evaluating the effectiveness of an explosion suppression system; --- evaluating the scale up of an explosion suppression system; -- evaluation and development of design tools for explosion suppression systems; -- instructions for installation of an explosion suppression system; -- maintenance instructions for an explosion suppression system. This European Standard is applicable only to explosion suppression systems intended for the protection of closed, or essentially closed, enclosures in which an explosion may result as a consequence of ignition of an explosible mixtures, e.g. dust-air mixtures, gas(vapour)-air mixtures, dust-gas(vapour)-air mixtures and mists. This European Standard is not applicable for explosions of materials listed below, or for mixtures containing some of those materials: -- unstable materials that are liable to dissociate; -- explosive materials; -- pyrotechnic materials; --- pyrophoric materials. NOTE For the listed materials expert advice is required.

1.1 Analytical methods for the measurement of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oxygen, nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, carbonyl sulfide, hydrogen halides, hydrogen cyanide, aldehydes, and hydrocarbons are described, along with sampling considerations. Many of these gases may be present in any fire environment. Several analytical techniques are described for each gaseous species, together with advantages and disadvantages of each. The test environment, sampling constraints, analytical range, and accuracy often dictate use of one analytical method over another.1.2 These techniques have been used to measure gases under fire test conditions (laboratory, small scale, or full scale). With proper sampling considerations, any of these methods could be used for measurement in most fire environments.1.3 This document is intended to be a guide for investigators and for subcommittee use in developing standard test methods. A single analytical technique has not been recommended for any chemical species unless that technique is the only one available.1.4 The techniques described herein determine the concentration of a specific gas in the total sample taken. These techniques do not determine the total amount of fire gases that would be generated by a specimen during conduct of a fire test.1.5 This standard is used to measure and describe the response of materials, products, or assembles to heat and flame under controlled conditions but does not by itself incorporate all factors required for fire hazard or fire risk assessment of the materials, products, or assemblies under actual fire conditionsThis standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

1.1 This test method covers a laboratory procedure to determine the hot-surface ignition temperature of dust layers, that is, measuring the minimum temperature at which a dust layer will self-heat. The test consists of a dust layer heated on a hot plate.1.2 Data obtained from this test method provide a relative measure of the hot-surface ignition temperature of a dust layer.1.3 This test method should be used to measure and describe the properties of materials in response to heat and flame under controlled laboratory conditions and should not be used to describe or appraise the fire hazard or fire hazard risk of materials, products, or assemblies under actual fire conditions. However, results of this test method may be used as elements of a fire risk assessment that takes into account all of the factors that are pertinent to an assessment of the fire hazard risk of a particular end use product. This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. Specific precautionary statements are given in Section 8.

The standard test method is designed to produce measurements of the rate of explosion pressure rise and the maximum rate of explosion pressure rise of a flammable gas/air/inert mixture in a closed volume at ambient temperature and pressure. In this European Standard, the term "gas" includes vapours but not mists. Detonation and decomposition phenomena are not considered in this European Standard. The rates of pressure rise measured by the procedures specified in this European Standard are not applicable to flameproof enclosures, that is enclosures intended to withstand an internal explosion and not to transmit it to an external explosive atmosphere, or any other closed volume where the internal geometry can result in pressure piling. Even in an enclosure of relatively simple geometry the disposition of the internal components can lead to rates of pressure rise significantly higher than those measured using this European Standard. Flameproof enclosures shall be constructed and tested in accordance with the requirements contained in EN 60079-1 for electrical equipment and EN 13463-3 for non-electrical equipment.
