This document provides a framework for specifying the properties and relevant test methods for multigrade paving grade bitumens which are suitable for use in the construction and maintenance of roads, airfields and other paved areas, together with information for attestation and verification of constancy of performance. Multigrade paving grade bitumens are designated in EN 12597:2000 as special bitumens for road applications having a positive penetration index (Ip). This document does not directly address cohesion, adhesion and settling ability, (see Clause Introduction).

4.1 Pitch does not go through a solid-liquid phase change when heated, and therefore does not have a true melting point. As the temperature is raised pitch gradually softens or becomes less viscous. For this reason, the determination of the softening point must be made by an arbitrary, but closely defined, method if the test values are to be reproducible. 4.2 This test method is useful in determining the consistency of pitches as one element in establishing the uniformity of shipments or sources of supply. 1.1 This test method covers the determination of the softening point of pitches having softening points in the range from 50 to 180°C by this test method, and gives results comparable to those obtained by Test Method D2319 above 176°F (80°C). 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

4.1 This procedure measures the amount of the more volatile constituents in cutback asphalt. The properties of the residue after distillation are not necessarily characteristic of the bitumen used in the original mixture, nor of the residue which may be left at any particular time after field application of the cutback asphalt. The presence of silicone in the cutback asphalt may affect the distillation residue by retarding the loss of volatile material after the residue has been poured into the residue container. 1.1 This test method covers a distillation test for cutback asphaltic (bituminous) products. 1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

4.1 To determine the characteristics of the asphalt in an asphalt paving mixture, it is necessary to extract the asphalt from the aggregate by means of a suitable solvent and then to recover the asphalt from the solvent without significantly changing the asphalt’s properties. The asphalt recovered from the solvent by this practice can be tested using the same methods as for the original asphalt cement, and comparisons between the properties of the original and recovered asphalt can be made. 4.2 Users are cautioned that the recovered binder properties from an asphalt mixture sample may not exactly represent the properties of the original asphalt binder due to factors outside of laboratory control such as aging, contamination, and molecular changes caused by exposure to heat and solvents. Consequently, recovered asphalt binder properties should not be used as a basis for acceptance.Note 1—The quality of the results produced by this is dependent on the competence of the personnel performing the procedure and the capability, calibration, and maintenance of the equipment used. Agencies that meet the criteria of Specification D3666 are generally considered capable of competent and objective testing, sampling, inspection, and so forth. Users of this practice are cautioned that compliance with Specification D3666 alone does not completely assure reliable results. Reliable results depend on many factors; following the suggestions of Specification D3666 or some similar acceptable guideline provides a means of evaluating and controlling some of those factors. 1.1 This practice is intended to be used to recover asphalt from a solvent using the rotary evaporator to ensure that changes in the asphalt properties during the recovery process are minimized. 1.2 Units—The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

3.1 These test methods are used for sampling and testing modified bitumen sheet materials. Property requirements, determined by these test methods, are found in the following product standards: Specifications D6162, D6163, D6164, D6222, D6223, D6298, and D6509. 1.1 These test methods cover procedures for sampling and testing prefabricated, reinforced, polymer-modified bituminous sheet materials designed for single- or multiple-ply application in roofing and waterproofing membranes. These products may use various surfacing materials on one side. 1.2 These test methods cover a number of different products. Not all tests are required for every product. Only those called out in the Product Standard are required. 1.3 These test methods appear in the following order:   Section     Sampling 8199;4 Conditioning 8199;5 Thickness 8199;6 Load Strain Properties 8199;7 Tear Strength 8199;8 Moisture Content 8199;9 Water Absorption 8199;10 Dimensional Stability 11 Low-Temperature Flexibility

4.1 Bitumens are viscoelastic materials without sharply defined melting points; they gradually become softer and less viscous as the temperature rises. For this reason, softening points must be determined by an arbitrary and closely defined method if results are to be reproducible. 4.2 The softening point is useful in the classification of bitumens, as one element in establishing the uniformity of shipments or sources of supply, and is indicative of the tendency of the material to flow at elevated temperatures encountered in service. 1.1 This test method covers the determination of the softening point of bitumen in the range from 30 to 157°C [86 to 315°F] using the ring-and-ball apparatus immersed in distilled water [30 to 80°C] or USP glycerin (above 80 to 157°C). 1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard.
