General methods of test for pigments and extenders - Part 14 : determination of resistivity of aqueous extract.
The method described in this standard is used for the determination of relative tinting strength and of colour difference on reduction of inorganic pigments. The relative tinting strength specified in this standard is the mass relation of reference- and test pigment weight, were the colour difference between reference and test ligthening has a minimum by visuell comparision.#,,#

The nonvolatile content and pigment content are measures of total solids and inorganic pigment solids, respectively, in electrocoat paints. In addition to production quality control, these properties are important in maintaining electrocoat baths in the optimum range. Other test methods for determining nonvolatile content of paint and paint related materials are described in Guide D 2832.1.1 These test methods cover the characterization of electrocoat baths through the determination of nonvolatile content of inorganic pigment content.1.2 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

This part of ISO 787 specifies a general method of test for comparing the lightening (reducing) power of a white pigment with the lightening power of an agreed sample of the same type. Two procedures (A and B) are described. Procedure A is quicker than procedure B and is suitable for testing one sample of pigment; procedure B is better for testing several samples, and especially if a pigment of unknown lightening power is being tested. NOTE When this general method is applicable to a given pigment, a cross-reference to it will simply be included in the International Standard relating to that pigment, with a note of any detailed modification which may be needed in view of the special properties of the pigment in question. Only when this general method is not applicable to a particular pigment will a special method for comparison of lightening power of white pigments be specified.

This part of ISO 787 specifies a general method of test for determining the resistivity (specific resistance) of the aqueous extract of a pigment. The method is applicable to all pigments and extenders, except pigments that are substantially soluble in water. It should be noted that the resistivity of the aqueous extract of a pigment should be considered as a property independent of the amount of water-soluble matter. If agreed, a cold extraction method may be used. This shall be stated in the test report, however. The standard temperature of determination should preferably be 23 °C but a different temperature may be agreed between the parties provided that the necessary corrections are made to take account of the differences in temperature. NOTE When this general method is applicable to a given pigment, a cross-reference to it will simply be included in the International Standard relating to that pigment, with a note of any detailed modification which may be needed in view of the special properties of the pigment in question. Only when this general method is not applicable to a particular pigment will a special method for determination of resistivity of aqueous extract be specified.

This part of ISO 787 specifies a general method of test for determining the water-soluble sulfates, chlorides and nitrates of pigments. NOTE When this general method is applicable to a given pigment, a cross-reference to it will simply be included in the International Standard relating to the pigment, with a note of any detailed modification which may be needed in view of the special properties of the pigment in question. Only when this general method is not applicable to a particular pigment will a special method for determination of water-soluble sulfates chlorides or nitrates be specified.

This part of ISO 787 specifies a general method of test for determining the percentage by mass of matter soluble in cold water, in a sample of pigment or extender. ISO 787-3 specifies a method for determining the percentage by mass of matter soluble in water by hot extraction. For most pigments and extenders, these two test methods will give different results, and it is therefore essential to state clearly in a specification which method is to be used, and in the test report which method has been used. NOTE The general methods given in the various parts of ISO 787 are usually applicable to any pigment or extender. Thus only a cross-reference to the appropriate part of ISO 787 needs to be included in the International Standard giving the specification for that pigment or extender, indicating any detailed modification that may be needed in view of the special properties of the material in question. Only when the general methods are not applicable to a particular material is a different method for determination of water-soluble matter to be specified.

This part of ISO 787 specifies a general method of test for determining the percentage by mass of matter soluble in boiling water, in a sample of pigment or extender. ISO 787-8 specifies a method for determining the percentage by mass of matter soluble in water by cold extraction. For most pigments and extenders, these two test methods will give different results, and it is therefore essential to state clearly in a specification which method is to be used, and in the test report which method has been used.
