This part of IEC 60404 specifies methods for the measurement of AC magnetic properties of soft magnetic materials, other than electrical steels and soft ferrites, in the frequency range 20 Hz to 100 kHz. The materials covered by this part of IEC 60404 include those speciality alloys listed in IEC 60404-8-6, amorphous and nano-crystalline soft magnetic materials, pressed and sintered and metal injection moulded parts such as are listed in IEC 60404-8-9, cast parts and magnetically soft composite materials. The object of this part is to define the general principles and the technical details of the measurement of the magnetic properties of magnetically soft materials by means of ring methods. For materials supplied in powder form, a ring test specimen is formed by the appropriate pressing method for that material. The measurement of the DC magnetic properties of soft magnetic materials is made in accordance with the ring method of IEC 60404-4. The determinations of the magnetic characteristics of magnetically soft components are made in accordance with IEC 62044-3. NOTE IEC 62044-3:2000 specifies methods for the measurement of AC magnetic characteristics of magnetically soft components in the frequency range up to 10 MHz. Normally, the measurements are made at an ambient temperature of (23 ± 5) °C on test specimens which have first been magnetized, then demagnetized. Measurements can be made over other temperature ranges by agreement between parties concerned.

This part of IEC 60404 defines the grades of cold-rolled grain-oriented electrical steel strip and sheet in nominal thicknesses of 0,23 mm, 0,27 mm, 0,30 mm and 0,35 mm. In particular, it gives general requirements, magnetic properties, geometric characteristics, tolerances and technological characteristics, as well as inspection procedures. This document applies to Goss textured grain-oriented electrical steel strip and sheet supplied in the final annealed condition in coils or sheets, and intended for the construction of magnetic circuits. The grades are grouped into two classes: conventional grades; high permeability grades, including grades which may be delivered in the domain refined condition. They correspond to Class C22 of IEC 60404-1.

This part of IEC 60404 defines the grades of thin non-oriented electrical steel strip and sheet in nominal thicknesses of 0,05 mm, 0,10 mm, 0,15 mm, 0,20 mm, 0,25 mm, 0,30 mm and 0,35 mm and of thin grain-oriented electrical steel strip and sheet in nominal thicknesses of 0,05 mm, 0,10 mm, 0,15 mm and 0,18 mm. In particular, it gives general requirements, magnetic properties, geometric characteristics and tolerances, technological characteristics, as well as inspection procedures. NOTE For thin non-oriented electrical steel strip and sheet, other nominal thicknesses (i.e. 0,12 mm, 0,18 mm, 0,23 mm and 0,27 mm) can be agreed between the manufacturer and the purchaser. 5.1 Flat-rolled electrical steel master coils are usually slit into narrower coils. Usually these slit coils are punched or sheared into laminations of various shapes. The laminations are then uniformly stacked to become the cores of magnetic devices such as motors and transformers. Stacking of many laminations exhibiting excessive taper causes assembly problems and poor appearance. Nonuniform stack lengths in motors cause imbalance and noise. When the laminations are interleaved in transformers, taper causes air spaces within the core resulting in increased noise, increased exciting current, and higher core loss. 1.1 This test method provides a procedure for measuring edge taper and crown of flat-rolled electrical steel coils as produced at the steel mill. 1.2 The values and equations stated in customary (cgs-emu and inch-pound) units or SI units are to be regarded separately as standard. Within this standard, the SI units are shown in brackets. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with this standard. 1.3 The following material specifications include requirements for edge taper or crown: A677, A683, A726, A876, and A1086. Specification A840 also includes requirements for edge taper or crown, but it has been withdrawn and reference to it is included for historical purposes. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. This part of IEC 60404 is intended to classify commercially available magnetic materials. The term "magnetic materials" denotes substances where the application requires the existence of ferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic properties. In this document, the classification of magnetic materials is based upon the generally recognized existence of two main groups of products: soft magnetic materials (coercivity 1000 A/m); hard magnetic materials (coercivity >1 000 A/m). Within these main groups, the classification when appropriate recognizes the following characteristics; the main alloying element and the metallurgical state and physical properties of the material; when possible and convenient, the relationship between these characteristics is identified. A classification by specific areas of application cannot be applied to all materials because different materials can very often be used for the same application depending on the characteristics required.
