This part of ISO 10791 specifies, with reference to ISO 230-1, the geometric tests for machining centres (or numerically controlled milling machines, boring machines, etc., where applicable) with integral indexable or continuous universal heads (vertical Z-axis). This part of ISO 10791 applies to machining centres having basically six numerically controlled axes, of which three are linear (X, Y and Z) up to 2 000 mm in length, and three are rotary (A or D and B on the head, and C' on the table). Movements other than those mentioned are considered as special features and the relevant tests are not included in this part of ISO 10791. This part of ISO 10791 describes geometric tests for three possible types of accessory universal heads, in the annexes: — annex A: Integral universal 45°split indexable heads (B and D axes), with mechanical indexing of the different angular positions of the two bodies (e.g. Hirth couplings): the relevant tests (AG1 to AG9) check only the resulting position of the spindle; — annex B: Integral universal swivel heads (B and A axes), with two numerically controlled rotary axes perpendicular to each other (tests BG1 to BG7); — annex C: Integral universal 45°split continuous heads (B and D axes), similar to the first type but provided with continuous positioning of the two numerically controlled rotary axes: the relevant tests (CG1 to CG7) check all the geometric features (planes and axes) which contribute to the resulting position of the spindle, excluding the positioning accuracy of the two rotary axes; these tests can also be used for a deeper investigation on the 45°indexable heads, if their movements and locks allow this. This part of ISO 10791 deals only with the verification of accuracy of the machine and does not apply to the testing of the machine operation, which should generally be checked separately. Certain tests concerning the performance of the machine operating under no-load or finishing conditions are included in other parts of ISO 10791.

This part of 10791 specifies, with reference to ISO 230-1, the geometric tests for machining centres (or numerically controlled milling machines, boring machines, etc., where applicable) with horizontal spindle (i.e. horizontal Z-axis). This part of ISO 10791 applies to machining centres having basically four numerically controlled axes, of which three are linear (X, Y and Z) up to 2 000 mm in length, and one is rotary (B'), but refers also to supplementary movements, such as those of sliding spindles, rams, or accessory universal heads. Movements other than those mentioned are considered as special features and the relevant tests are not included in this part of ISO 10791. This part of ISO 10791 takes into consideration, in annexes A, B and C, three possible types of accessory universal heads, described as follows: — annex A: 45°split indexable heads, with mechanical indexing of the different angular positions of the two bodies (e.g. Hirth couplings): the relevant tests (AG1 to AG9) check only the resulting position of the spindle; — annex B: swivel heads, with two numerically controlled rotary axes perpendicular to each other (tests BG1 to BG7); — annex C: 45°split continuous heads, similar to the first type but provided with continuous positioning of the two numerically controlled rotary axes: the relevant tests (CG1 to CG7) check all the geometric features (planes and axes) which contribute to the resulting position of the spindle, excluding the positioning accuracy of the two rotary axes; these tests can also be used for a deeper investigation of the 45°indexable heads, if their movements and locks allow this. This part of ISO 10791 specifies, with reference to ISO 230-2, the tolerances which apply to the positioning tests for linear axes, up to 2 000 mm in length, and rotary axes of machining centres. It does not deal with environmental conditions, warm-up of the machine and measuring methods, already described in ISO 230-2.

This part of ISO 10791 specifies, with reference to ISO 230-1, certain kinematic tests for machining centres, concerning the spindle speeds, the feeds of the individual NC linear axes and the accuracy of the paths described by the simultaneous movement of two or more NC linear and/or rotary axes (see clause 4).

This part of ISO 10791 specifies, with reference to ISO 230-1 and ISO 230-2, the tests intended to assess the repeatability of positioning of individual pallets and the total accuracy of positioning of a batch of pallets associated with a specific machine. In a manufacturing system the accuracy of positioning of a workpiece or a work-holding fixture depends on the fitting between pallets and receivers. It should be noted that this part of ISO 10791 applies to a single machining centre, i.e. to the single receiver, with multiple pallets. The results of the tests considered here could be extended to the whole manufacturing system only if the measuring instruments were placed on the different machines exactly in the same position with respect to the origins of the linear axes. This, in practice, is difficult and inaccurate, because origins of the linear axis are affected by the repeatability of the axes.

This part of ISO 10791 specifies, with reference to ISO 230-1, series of cutting tests, under finishing conditions, of standard test pieces, as well as the characteristics and dimensions of the test pieces themselves. This part of ISO 10791 is intended to supply minimum requirements for assessing the cutting accuracy of the machine. Different, more severe or more expensive tests may be performed by agreement between supplier/manufacturer and user.
