1.1 These requirements apply to membrane switches actuated by human activity, via a membrane or sensing substrate, to operate or control appliances and electrical equipment. The membrane switch electrical rating not to exceed 30 Vrms and power not greater than 100 VA. 1.2 When this outline references ²switches² it shall mean ²membrane switches² unless specifically indicated. 1.3 Membrane switches which incorporate additional control functions governed by the switch function are within the scope of these requirements. Additional control functions shall be evaluated for their suitability using the applicable standards for the application. 1.4 These membrane switches are intended to be operated by a person, via a membrane or by actuating a sensing substrate. 1.5 These requirements cover the indirect actuation of the switch when the operation of the actuating member or sensing unit is provided by a remote control or a part of an appliance or equipment such as a door. 1.6 Embedded components are evaluated with regards to their safety and application to the membrane switch construction. The acceptability of an embedded component in the membrane switch shall be considered with regards to construction and performance requirements in the end product final application.

1 Scope This part of IEC 60669 applies to manually operated general purpose switches, for a.c. only with a rated voltage not exceeding 440 V and a rated current not exceeding 63 A, intended for household and similar fixed electrical installations, either indoors or outdoors. For switches provided with screwless terminals the rated current is limited to 16 A. Switches covered by this standard are intended for the control in normal use of: – a circuit for a tungsten filament lamp load; or – a circuit for a fluorescent lamp load (including electronic ballast); or – a circuit for a substantially resistive load with a power factor not less than 0,95; or – a monophase circuit for motor load with a rated current up to 10 A and a power factor not less than 0,6; or – a combination of these. NOTE 1 An extension of the scope to switches for rated voltages higher than 440 V is under consideration. NOTE 2 An increase of the rated current of 10 A for motor load is under consideration. NOTE 3 For the time being, switches with a rated current more than 10 A are considered as a 10 A current for motor load switch. The standard also applies to boxes for switches, with the exception of mounting boxes for flush type switches. NOTE 4 General requirements for boxes for flush-type switches are given in IEC 60670. It also applies to switches such as: – switches incorporating pilot lights; – electromagnetic remote control switches (particular requirements are given in the relevant part 2); – switches incorporating a time-delay device (particular requirements are given in the relevant part 2); – combinations of switches and other functions (with the exception of switches combined with fuses); – electronic switches (particular requirements are given in the relevant part 2); – switches having facilities for the outlet and retention of flexible cables (see annex B); – isolating switches (particular requirements are given in the relevant Part 2). NOTE 5 The minimum length of the flexible cable used with these switches may be governed by National Wiring Rules. Switches complying with this standard are suitable for use at ambient temperatures not normally exceeding 25 °C, but occasionally reaching 35 °C. NOTE 6 Switches complying with this standard are suitable only for incorporation in equipment in such a way and in such a place that it is unlikely that the surrounding ambient temperature exceeds 35 °C. In locations where special conditions prevail, such as in ships, vehicles and the like and in hazardous locations, for example where explosions are liable to occur, special constructions may be required.

The force and displacement values when converted to a slope are useful in quantifying the differences in tactile response among membrane switches. Specified resistance is useful to manufacturers and users when designing membrane switch interface circuitry. Actuation force and contact force are useful to manufacturers and users in determining the suitability, reference and aesthetics of a membrane switch in a given application. The tendency of a switch to make or break electrical contact at unexpected moments during closure or release can be a sign of a poor design. The degree of teasing can range from a simple annoyance to a failure of critical control process. The amount of switch sensitivity or teasing can also be a result of poor surface conductivity that will prevent an electrical event even when switch poles are in partial contact.1.1 This test method covers the measurement of force displacement characteristics of a membrane switch.1.1.1 This test method replaces Test Method F 1570. The Tactile Response Slope has been determined to be a more representative characterization of a tactile sensation.1.1.2 This test method replaces Test Method F 1682.1.1.3 This test method replaces Test Method F 1597.1.1.4 This test method replaces Test Method F 1997.1.2 Force displacement hysterisis loop curve can be used in the determination of Actuation Force, Displacement, Contact Force, Return Force, and Tactile Response Slope. This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. These requirements cover clock-operated switches rated 600 V or less, to be used in ordinary locations designed to close and open circuits to a load at predetermined intervals, and intended to be employed in accordance with the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA 70. These requirements cover only clock-operated switches in which the switching contacts are actuated by a clock-work, by a gear-train, by hand, by electrically-wound spring motors, by electric clock-type motors, or by equivalent arrangements. In addition to closing and opening the switching contacts, the devices may also indicate the time of day or time interval. These requirements do not cover devices incorporating electronic timing circuits or switching circuits without separable contacts. A clock-operated switch, which is incomplete in construction features or restricted in performance capabilities, is acceptable for use as a factory-installed component provided that the restrictions established for the component are eliminated when the component is installed. Specific provisions are included in these requirements for TV rated clock-operated switches.
