This International Standard defines the conceptual schema for the description of spatial referencing by coordinates, optionally extended to spatio-temporal referencing. It describes the minimum data required to define one-, two- and three-dimensional spatial coordinate reference systems with an extension to merged spatial-temporal reference systems. It allows additional descriptive information to be provided. It also describes the information required to change coordinates from one coordinate reference system to another. In this International Standard, a coordinate reference system does not change with time. For coordinate reference systems defined on moving platforms such as cars, ships, aircraft and spacecraft, the transformation to an Earth-fixed coordinate reference system can include a time element. This International Standard is applicable to producers and users of geographic information. Although it is applicable to digital geographic data, its principles can be extended to many other forms of geographic data such as maps, ch..arts and text documents. The schema described can be applied to the combination of horizontal position with a third non-spatial parameter which varies monotonically with height or depth. This extension to non-spatial data is beyond the scope of this International Standard but can be implemented through profiles.

This International Standard defines a core profile of the spatial schema specified in ISO 19107 that specifies, in accordance with ISO 19106, a minimal set of geometric elements necessary for the efficient creation of application schemata. This International Standard supports many of the spatial data formats and description languages already developed and in broad use within several nations or liaison organizations.

This Technical Report identifies the standards, technical specifications, technical reports and guidelines, required to implement a Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) in Europe. It gives recommendations as to whether any of these items should become EN, and proposes a roadmap for future work items. It further provides recommendations for measures to be taken in order to support implementation and maintenance of a SDI. In so doing, the report addresses a range of topics, including:  multi-lingual aspects,  consistent identification of geographical items,  conformance testing,  geographic information metadata including catalogue service profile and guidelines, and  WMS and WFS profiles and guidelines.

This part of BS 7666 defines the essential components of a gazetteer of geographic locations and provides a general model of spatial references based upon named spatial units in the United Kingdom. It defines the attributes of each geographic location to be recorded in a gazetteer, and the metadata associated with the gazetteer. This part of BS 7666 may be used for defining gazetteers of locations and systems of spatial references based upon named spatial units, but does not specify any particular ones, nor does it define a database schema. It provides the basis for the other parts of BS 7666 by defining general structures to enable gazetteers of a range of classes of geographic locations to be created in a consistent way. Specific gazetteers of particular classes of locations are defined in the other parts of BS 7666.

This part of BS 7666 specifies the logical data structure for a gazetteer of land and property, consistent with Part 0 of this standard. It is based upon the concept of a basic land and property unit (BLPU), and specifies the data to be recorded and maintained in a gazetteer. It also specifies the way in which the boundary of a BLPU may be represented and linked to the gazetteer. It does not provide a database design or a transfer format. This part of BS 7666 is intended for use by those compiling land and property gazetteers, for a range of purposes including property records and addressing. It enables different users of land and property information to link different land and property identifiers (LPI) via a common unique property reference number (UPRN). A checklist for verification of conformity is given in Annex A.

This part of BS 7666 specifies the data to be maintained in a gazetteer of streets, consistent with Part 0 of this standard. This enables different users of street information to use the same data with consistency of content, accuracy, currency and format. Different ways of referencing a street are defined so that data can be accessed by street name, description, route number, unique reference number or external crossreference. This part of BS 7666 also specifies the means of representing the geometry of the street in terms of coordinates. Three ways are allowed for this with successive levels of detail: a) by identifying the end points of a street, and representing the street as a single line segment; b) by breaking the street at its intermediate junctions to create a set of constituent line segments, termed elementary street units; c) by describing the course of each elementary street unit. Each of these options is defined by a level of conformance to the standard. This part of BS 7666 is intended for use by those compiling street gazetteers for purposes of highways and streetworks management, property addressing and navigation. It does not provide a database design or a transfer format. This part of BS 7666 also specifies how additional information on Public Rights of Way may be recorded. This only applies to England and Wales.

This part of BS 7666 specifies the logical data structure and data content for a gazetteer of delivery points, for purposes of identification, access and validation of service requests. It does not provide a database design or a transfer format. It provides a method of referencing delivery points by means of unique references and descriptive delivery addresses. This part of BS 7666 is for use by suppliers of delivery and collection services, such as distribution organizations. It facilitates data sharing to enable the provision of collaborative services, and provides a consistency of references for analysis and planning purposes.

This International Standard specifies the behaviour of a service that produces spatially referenced maps dynamically from geographic information. It specifies operations to retrieve a description of the maps offered by a server to retrieve a map, and to query a server about features displayed on a map. This International Standard is applicable to pictorial renderings of maps in a graphical format; it is not applicable to retrieval of actual feature data or coverage data values.
