The scope of this Supplement is stated as follows: Examine existing horizontal and vertical protocol extensions that can support the signalling of admission control priority in Next Generation Networks (NGN). Specifically, if such extensions exist, then the number of allowed priority levels need to be defined such that all three Y.2171 admission control priority levels/categories can be supported. Emphasize critical priority requirements for ETS – note that Y.2171 Priority Level 1 is exclusively reserved for emergency telecommunications applications. Provide guidance in terms of suggested mappings between existing priority supporting protocol extensions and Y.2171 priority levels/categories. If existing extensions are found to be insufficient in supporting all Y.2171 priority levels/categories, then further actions can be recommended appropriately.

This Recommendation specifies a profile for telecommunication applications based on [IEEE 1588] precision time protocol (PTP). The profile specifies the [IEEE 1588] functions that are necessary to ensure network element interoperability for the delivery of frequency only. The profile is based on the architecture described in [ITU-T G.8265] and definitions described in [ITU-T G.8260]. The first version of the profile specifies the high-level design requirements, modes of operation for the exchange of PTP messages, the PTP protocol mapping, the use of unicast transmission and negotiation, an alternate best master clock algorithm (BMCA), as well as the PTP protocol configuration parameters. This Recommendation also specifies some aspects necessary for use in a telecom environment which are outside the scope of, and complement the PTP profile.
