This part of ISO 8038 specifies the dimensions of screw thread type RMS as one type of thread for connecting a microscope objective to the nosepiece. NOTE 1 The values given in this part of ISO 8038 conform, except for the length of the thread lug, to the internationally used screw thread laid down by the Microscopical Society of London in 1858, and published [1] as the Royal Microscopical Society Standard (RMS Standard) in 1936. The use of this screw thread is recommended for microscopes unless other fittings are required for optical or design reasons. NOTE 2 A specific combination of eyepiece, objective and tube lens (if provided, e.g. infinity optics) is frequently used to correct aberrations. Therefore the combination of an objective from one manufacturer, although conforming to this part of ISO 8038, and an eyepiece from another manufacturer may cause loss of image quality. Objectives and eyepieces of one manufacturer can be combined with microscopes of another manufacturer if they conform to this part of ISO 8038 and also to ISO 9345-1 [2]. note:1) The maximum length of the thread lug according to this part of ISO 8038 is 5 mm. The RMS Standard specifies the length of the thread as 3,175 mm and length of the guide cylinder as 2,540 mm, giving a total of 5,715 mm.

This part of ISO 8036 specifies requirements for immersion oil for general use in light microscopy in the visible spectral range. NOTE 1 Visible spectral range is defined as being the wavelength range from 400 nm to 760 nm. Owing to its optical effect, immersion oil forms part of the optical system of a microscope; this part of ISO 8036 specifies the requirements which shall be met to ensure image quality. NOTE 2 This part of ISO 8036 does not cover requirements for suitability for fluorescence microscopy; immersion oil suitable for fluorescence microscopy will be dealt with in ISO 8036-2.

1.1 This test method covers a procedure for measuring the refractive index of glass samples, irregularly shaped and as small as 300 ug, for the comparison of fragments of a known source to recovered fragments from a questioned source. 1.2 This test method does not include the measurement of optical dispersion or the measurement of refractive index at any other wavelength other than the Sodium D line. This method employs a narrow band pass filter at 589 mm, but other filters could be employed using the described method and allowing the nx'' to be determined at other wavelengths, therefore, also allowing for the dispersion value to be calculated. 1.3 Alternative methods for the determination of nx'' are listed in Refs (1-5). 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety problems, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
