Gabions and Revet Mattresses, as described in Specification A 975, are used to achieve soil stability and prevent soil erosion and are also used as retaining wall structures to resist movements due to gravity. Their ability to function properly depends on correct design and installation. This standard practice describes the proper installation of gabions and revet mattresses to ensure the products function as intended by the manufacturers. This practice offers a set of instructions for performing one or more specific operations and does not replace professional judgment. Not all aspects of this practice may be applicable in all situations. This ASTM standard is not intended to represent or replace the standard of care by which the adequacy of a given professional service must be judged, nor should this document be applied without consideration of a projectrsquo;many unique aspects.1.1 This specification covers standard practice for assembly, placement and filling of double-twisted wire mesh gabions and revet mattresses used for various erosion control, soil retention or freestanding structures. The product size, type and alignment must be determined by the user. Resiliency may be used to control the quality of many TRMs. Resiliency may be indicative of a TRMrsquo;ability to retain original configuration after exposure to the stresses which may be exerted during manufacture, shipping, and installation. Resiliency is not generally indicative of field performance. The resiliency of TRMs may vary considerably depending on the pressure applied to the specimen during loading cycles. To minimize variation, specific sample size and applied pressure are indicated in this test method to ensure all results are comparable. To determine the effect of different pressure loadings on the final thickness of TRMs, use this test method. This test method may be used for acceptance testing of commercial shipments of TRMs, but caution is advised since information on between-laboratory precision is incomplete. Comparative tests, in accordance with 5.4.1 may be advisable. 5.4.1 In a case of a dispute arising from differences in reported test results when using this test method for acceptance testing of commercial shipments, the purchaser and the supplier should conduct comparative tests to determine if there is a statistical bias between their laboratories. Competent statistical assistance is recommended for the investigation of bias. As a minimum, the two parties should take a group of test specimens that are as homogeneous as possible and that are formed from a lot of material of the type in question. The test specimens should be randomly assigned in equal numbers to each laboratory for testing. The average results from the two laboratories should be compared using Studentrsquo;t-test for unpaired date and an acceptable probability level chosen by the two begun. If bias is found, either its cause must corrected, or the purchaser and be found and interpret future tests in supplier must agree to the light of the known bias. Note 18212;The user should be aware that the compressibility of the materials, their rebound characteristics, and the like will also be affected by the thickness of the TRMs following the time when they are rolled up on rolls shipped and stored.1.1 This test method covers the resiliency or recovery of turf reinforcement mats (TRMs) after they have been subjected to three cycles of loading at 689 kPa (100 psi) for 1 min/per cycle.1.2 This test method does not provide resiliency values for TRMs under variable normal compressive stresses. This test method determines nominal resiliency.1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only.This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
