The extensive and increasing use of pneumatic springs in automotive applications has made it appropriate that this manual be prepared to assist the engineer and the designer in understanding the basic principles and uses of pneumatic springs. This manual provides descriptions of the principles involved in pneumatic spring function along with details of the various configurations of pneumatic spring devices and the unique characteristics of each. Pneumatic spring types have been defined correlating with SAE J511 in the SAE (Oct. 1970) handbook regarding pneumatic spring terminology. Background information tracing the evolution of pneumatic springs has been included, as well as some specific examples of design calculations to serve as a guideline for the designer. Supplementary information regarding auxiliary components and design considerations frequently encountered in automotive pneumatic spring application is provided in an effort to make this manual useful to the automotive engineer. It is the intent of the authors that this manual will be used to guide the engineer in pneumatic spring design and apprise him of the general capabilities and limitations of pneumatic springs. The curves, charts, tables, and calculations in the manual use only sI recommended units.

The test method provides a screening device that permits differentiation among products having distinctly different leakage characteristics (Note 1). It is not the equivalent of longtime service tests, nor is it intended to distinguish between wheel bearing greases showing similar or borderline leakage. Note 18212;It is possible for skilled operators to observe significant changes in other important grease characteristics that occurred during the test. Such additional information can be of special interest to individual operators. The observations, however, are subject to differences in personal judgment among operators, and cannot be used effectively for quantitative rating.1.1 This test method covers the evaluation of the leakage tendencies of wheel bearing greases when tested under prescribed laboratory conditions.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. For specific hazard information see 8 and Annex A2.
Standard Test Method for Leakage Tendencies of Automotive Wheel Bearing Greases
This standard establishes minimum requirements for the preparation of engineering drawings for passenger car and light truck chassis frames. This standard does not apply to heavy truck, trailer, tractor, and off-the road vehicle chassis frames.

This SAE Recommended Practice includes wheel mounting elements subject to standardization in a series of industrial and agricultural disc wheels. The disc may be reversible or nonreversible and concave or convex.
Wheel Mounting Elements for Industrial and Agricultural Disc wheels
This SAE Recommended Practice is intended to serve as a guide for standardization of features, dimensions, and configurations of balance weights and rim flanges for aluminum and steel wheels intended for use on passenger cars, light trucks, and multipurpose vehicles to assure good insertion and retention of the balance weight on the rim flange. This document also provides test procedures and minimum performance requirements for testing balance weight retention. Alternate materials and geometries can be addressed in the future.

Light alloy wheels for pneumatic tyres. Specifications
This SAE Standard is limited to concise specifications promoting an adequate understanding between spring maker and spring user on all practical requirements in the finished spring. The basic concepts for the spring design and for many of the details have been fully dealt with in HS J788.
Leaf Springs for Motor Vehicle Suspension Made to Metric Units
This International Standard specifies the character-istics required of attachments mounted on the front of commercial road vehicles and buses (as defined in ISO 3833) of maximum total authorized mass over 3,5 t (ISO-M08). The attachment permits the use of ropes, cables or bars, at the choice of the manufac-turer, allowing the vehicle to be towed, or otherwise manoeuvred by other vehicles, or to be used for manoeuvring other vehicles. It excludes attach-ments for emergency operations, e.g. recovery of road vehicles after an accident. This International Standard does not apply to special purpose vehicles and standard vehicles used for special applications.
