The air permeability test method is based on the Kozeny equation. Weighed fibres (test specimen) are introduced in a measuring chamber with known volume. Air is passed through this test specimen. A scale indicating variations in permeability of air may be calibrated in appropriate absolute units of rate of flow or pressure difference and a table or graph is provided for conversion of the observed reading into values of mean diameter of the measured wool fibres.

Wool textiles may contain solvent-extractable oils and fats. The amount of these substances present depends on the stage of manufacture, and its estimation is important for determining the clean wool content of a sample. The method is only applicable to 100 % wool products. It may give misleading results if applied to products in which fibres other than wool are present.

Cysteic acid is one of the oxidation products of the amino acids cystine and cysteine. The cysteic acid content of raw wool is normally very low. It increases with photochemical degradation (weathering). Finishing processes such as bleaching or chlorination always result in an increase in cysteic acid. The severity of any kind of oxidation may be determined directly by quantitative determination of cysteic acid. Applicable to all-wool textiles in any form before and after dyeing - for example, loose wool, sliver, slubbing, yarn or fabric.

Specifies a method for the determination principally of mean length and coefficient of variation of length for all-wool slivers and rovings. It is not directly applicable to slivers made up of a blend of two or more fibres. Selection of test specimen is effected using an auxiliary machine, called "mechanical grip". It may be used on top slivers, on worsted drawing slivers and rovings, and on slivers from the semi-worsted system.

The method is applicable to woolen and worsted products, at all stages, from raw materials to yarn. It utilizes the same apparatus and technique as that described in ISO/R 137. Since the method of preparation and measurements gives a length-biased sample, the result given by this method is an estimate of the length of medullated fibres as a percentage of the total length of all fibres. It cannot be used to estimate the volume of medullation or fibre density.
