This test method is useful in determining the approximate amount of nonvolatile inorganic material in wet blue. This may be in the form of salts or oxides of the elements. In a mixed-chrome tannage, the approximate percentage of other elements in the wet blue may be determined by subtracting the chromic oxide that may be conveniently determined on the ash. (See Test Method D 6714.) The specified temperature of 600°C is high enough to produce a reproducible result but it does not completely dehydrate such oxides as aluminum oxide (Al2O3) and chromic oxide (Cr2O3). Likewise, such salts as sulfates and phosphates may be incompletely dehydrated, and if alkalis and chromium are present simultaneously, oxidation to chromate may occur. Therefore, caution is advised in drawing conclusions based on quantitative relations of the elements.1.1 This test method covers the determination of total ash in wet blue.1.2 Total ash in wet blue may be reported upon a number of different bases (for example, fat-free, moisture-free, as received, excluding chromium, and so forth). The resistance of leather to abrasion, as measured on a testing machine in the laboratory, is generally only one of several factors contributing to wear performance or durability as experienced in the actual use of the material. While “abrasion resistance” (often stated in terms of the number of abrasion cycles) and “durability” (defined as the ability to withstand deterioration or wear out in use, including the effects of abrasion) are frequently related, the relationship varies with different end uses and different factors may be necessary in any calculation of predicted durability from specific abrasion data. This test method provides a comparative ranking of material performance, which can be used as an indication of relative end-use performance. The resistance of leather to abrasion may be affected by factors including test conditions, type of abradant, pressure between the specimen and abradant, mounting or tension of the specimen, and type, kind, or amount of finishing materials. Abrasion tests utilizing the rotary platform, double-head tester may be subject to variation due to changes in the abradant during specific tests. Depending on abradant type and test specimen, the wheel surface may change (that is, become clogged) due to the pick up of finishing or other materials from test specimens and must be cleaned at regularly defined intervals. This International Standard specifies a method of determination of volatile matter which is applicable to all leather types. It is not possible to determine the exact moisture content of leather by this method. This is because at elevated temperatures other volatile substances escape and tannins and fats can be oxidized. Some absorbed water may be left in the leather after drying.

This International Standard specifies a method for determining the amount of colour transferred from the surface of coloured leather to other surfaces by rubbing. Two tests are carried out, one with a dry rubbing cloth and one with a wet rubbing cloth. The method is applicable to all types of coloured leather. Since after-treatments of the leather as well as surface finishes can affect the degree of colour transfer, the test can be made before and/or after such treatment.
