This part of EN 581 specifies the general safety requirements for outdoor seating and tables for camping, domestic and contract for use by adults, without regard to materials, design/construction or manufacturing processes. It does not apply to seating for spectator facilities. It does not include requirements for the durability of upholstery materials, castors, reclining and tilting mechanisms and seat height adjustment mechanisms. Mechanical safety requirements are covered by EN 581-2 for seating and EN 581-3 for tables. Annex A (informative) is a schematic presentation of requirements and conditions concerning shear and squeeze points. Annex B (informative) is a rationale concerning fingers injury.

This European Standard specifies the minimum requirements for the safety, strength and durability of all types of outdoor tables for adults, without regard to materials, design/construction or manufacturing processes. It does not apply to street furniture. With the exception of stability tests the standard does not provide assessment of the suitability of any storage features included in tables. It does not include requirements for the durability of castors/wheels and height adjustment mechanisms. It does not include requirements for electrical safety. It does not include requirements for the resistance to ageing and degradation caused by light, temperature and moisture.

1.1 This consumer safety specification establishes safety performance requirements, test methods, and labeling requirements to minimize the hazards to infants presented by infant inclined sleep products as identified in the introduction. 1.2 This consumer safety specification is intended to minimize the risk of injuries to infants resulting from normal use and reasonably foreseeable misuse or abuse of infant inclined sleep products. 1.3 This consumer safety performance specification covers a free standing product with an inclined sleep surface primarily intended and marketed to provide sleeping accommodations for an infant up to 5 months old or when the infant begins to roll over or pull up on sides, whichever comes first. It also covers a smaller product intended for newborns up to 3 months old or when newborn begins to wiggle out of position or turn over in the product or weighs more than 15 lb (6.8 kg), whichever comes first. It also covers infant and newborn inclined sleep product accessories, which are attached to, or supported by, another product with the same age or abilities, or both, as the free standing products. If the inclined sleep product can be converted into a product for which another ASTM standard consumer safety specification exists, the product shall meet the applicable requirements of that standard. For example, an inclined sleep product that can have the recline angle adjusted below 10° shall also comply with the applicable requirements of Consumer Safety Specification F2194. 1.4 No infant inclined sleep product produced after the approval date of this consumer safety specification shall, either by label or other means, indicate compliance with this specification unless it conforms to all requirements contained herein. 1.5 The following precautionary caveat pertains only to the test method portion, Section 7, of this consumer safety specification: This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. 5.1 This test method provides a means of measuring a variety of fire-test-response characteristics resulting from burning a test specimen, mattress or mattress with foundation. After ignition using a propane gas burner, the test specimen is permitted to burn freely under well-ventilated conditions. The most important fire-test-response characteristic measured in this test method is the rate of heat release, which quantifies the intensity of the fire generated. 5.2 The rate of heat release is measured by the principle of oxygen consumption. Annex A3 discusses the assumptions and limitations. 5.3 This test method also provides measures of other fire-test-response characteristics, including smoke obscuration (as the rate of smoke release, total smoke released, or optical density of smoke), combustion gas release (as concentrations of combustion gases), and mass loss, which are important to making decisions on fire safety. 5.4 In the majority of fires, the most important gaseous components of smoke are the carbon oxides, present in all fires. They are indicators of the toxicity of the atmosphere and of the completeness of combustion. Measurement of concentrations of carbon oxides are useful for two purposes: (1) as part of fire hazard assessment calculations and (2) to improve the accuracy of heat release measurements. Other toxic combustion gases, which are specific to certain materials, are also indicators of the toxicity of the atmosphere, but are less crucial for determining combustion completeness and are optional measures; however, fire hazard assessment often requires their measurement. 5.5 The type of ignition chosen (flaming source) is common in both accidental and intentional fires in public occupancies. The test method is thus applicable to mattresses in public occupancies. Such facilities include, but are not limited to, health-care facilities, old age convalescent and board and care homes, and college dormitories and residence halls. 5.6 One of the following three configurations is to be used in this test method: 5.6.1 Test Configuration A—A test room with the following dimensions: 3.66 by 2.44 by 2.44 m (12 by 8 by 8 ft) high. 5.6.2 Test Configuration B—A test room with the following dimensions: 3.66 by 3.05 by 2.44 m (12 by 10 by 8 ft) high. 5.6.3 Test Configuration C—An open calorimeter (or furniture calorimeter). 5.7 Rooms of other dimensions are acceptable where it has been shown that equivalent test results are obtained. 5.8 Measurements in the three test ......

It does not apply to other tables in the office area, which are covered by EN 15372. Annex A (informative) contains a test for the deflection of tables tops.
