This International Standard describes a test method for the simultaneous measurement of tritium and carbon-14 in water samples by liquid scintillation counting of a source obtained by mixing the water sample with a hydrophilic scintillation cocktail. This is considered a screening method because of the potential presence of interfering nuclides in the test sample. The method can be used for any type of environmental study or monitoring. This International Standard is applicable to all types of waters having an activity concentration ranging from 5 Bq/l to 106 Bq/l (upper limit of the liquid scintillation counters for direct counting). For higher activity concentrations, the sample can be diluted to obtain a test sample within this range.

This part of ISO 13164 describes a test method for the determination of radon-222 (222Rn) activity concentration in non-saline waters by extraction and liquid scintillation counting. The radon-222 activity concentrations, which can be measured by this test method utilizing currently available instruments, are at least above 0,5 Bq l−1 for a 10 ml test sample and a measuring time of 1 h. This test method can be used successfully with drinking water samples and it is the responsibility of the laboratory to ensure the validity of this test method for water samples of untested matrices. Annex A gives indication on the necessary counting conditions to meet the required detection limits for drinking water monitoring.

This International Standard specifies an early-life stage test procedure for determination of the toxic effects of a chemical substance, effluent, or water sample on a cold-water marine and brackish water copepod species under semi-static conditions. The biological endpoints include survival and development of the early-life stages. The exposure starts with eggs and is continued until emergence of juvenile stages. Copepods occur widely in marine, brackish, and fresh water ecosystems. They represent important prey items for the larvae of many fish and larger invertebrates and are increasingly used as a live food source in aquaculture. They feed on phytoplankton and, thus, are an ecologically important energy-transfer link between primary producers and higher trophic levels.

This European Standard specifies a method for the sampling of fish in lakes, using benthic multi-mesh gillnets and gives recommendations on sampling of fish with pelagic multi-mesh gillnets. The method provides a whole-lake estimate for species occurrence, quantitative relative fish abundance, biomass expressed as Catch Per Unit Effort (CPUE) and size structure of fish assemblages in temperate lakes. It also provides estimates that are comparable over time within a lake and between lakes. This European Standard specifies routines for sampling, data handling and reporting, and provides information on applications and further treatment of data. It also provides guidance for the sampling of fish for age and growth analyses. According to the principles of this standard other lentic water bodies can be sampled.

This Technical Specification specifies a method for the determination of tributyltin cation (TBT) in whole water samples. It is applicable to the analysis of TBT in surface water, which may contain suspended particulate matter (SPM) up to 500 mg/l (whole water samples), groundwater, drinking water and seawater. The working range is 0,04 ng/l to 20 ng/l. The LOQ will be mainly determined by the blank value obtained during validation of this method. NOTE 1 The method has been successfully applied to seawater samples during method development, but sea water samples were not included in the interlaboratory comparison.
