This part of ISO 3856 describes a flameless atomic absorption spectrometric method for the determination of the mercury content of the test solutions, prepared according to ISO 6713 or other suitable International Standards. The method is applicable to paints having "soluble" mercury contents in the range of about 0,005 to 0,05 % (m/m), but the part of this method covering the examination of the liquid portion of the paint is restricted to water-dilutable paints. CAUTION — The procedures described in this part of ISO 3856 are intended to be carried out by qualified chemists or by other suitably trained and/or supervised personnel. The substances and procedures used in this method may be injurious to health if adequate precautions are not taken. Attention is drawn in the text (see 4.6 and 4.7) to certain specific hazards. This part of ISO 3856 refers only to its technical suitability and does not absolve the user from statutory obligations relating to health and safety.

1 This International Standard describes a method for assessing the natural spreading rate of application of a product (in terms of area per wet film mass or area per wet film volume, as appropriate) when applied by brush to test panels. 2 The method is not suitable for products that contain highly volatile solvents. NOTE — The results are dependent on the type and nature of the substrate. Although consistent results may be obtained by one operator, care should be taken if results between operators and be-tween laboratories are to be compared. In such circumstances, the use of a common reference product is recommended.

This part of ISO 7724 describes the method for determining the colour co-ordinates of paint films, The method is only applicable to paint films that appear to be uniformly of one colour, i.e. monochromatic, when examined with normal vision. Paint films that do not completely hide a non-transparent substrate represent an opaque system and may be measured by using the procedure described in this part of ISO 7724. Luminescent paint films, transparent paint films and translucent paint films (for example for displays or lamp glass), retroreflecting paint films (for example for traffic signs), and metallic paint films are outside the scope of this part of ISO 7724.

This part of ISO 7724 describes a method for the quantitative colorimetric evaluation of small colour differences between paint films. NOTE — There are numerous formulae for calculating a colour difference from the colour co-ordinates of two specimens. For various reasons the results given by such formulae, including the one defined here, do not in all cases agree satisfactorily with visual perception nor are they likely to agree with each other. The Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) recommended in 1976 two formulae for general use. One of these, the CIE 1976 (L*a*b*) colour difference formula (see CIE Publication No. 15 Supplement No. 2), has proved to be of practical value for the colorimetric evaluation of paint films and is specified for this application in this part of ISO 7724.

This International Standard specifies a method for determining the fineness of grind of paints and related products by the use of a suitable gauge, graduated in micrometres. NOTE — Certain fineness-of-grind gauges that are used in industry are graduated in non-SI units (see annex A). Use of these units is not recommended.

1 This International Standard specifies three methods for the measurement of the specular gloss of paint films, with 20°, 60° and 85° geometry. The methods are not suitable for the measurement of the gloss of metallic paints. a) The 60° geometry method is applicable to all paint films but, for very high-gloss paints or those of near-matt sheen, the 20° or the 85° geometry method may be more suitable. b) The 20° geometry method is intended for obtaining improved differentiation of high-gloss paints, that is those with a 60° gloss higher than 70 units. This does not mean, however, that the 60 geometry method cannot be used for paints having a 60° gloss higher than 70 units. c) The 85° geometry method is intended for obtaining improved differentiation of low-gloss paints, that is those with a 60° gloss lower than 30 units. This does not mean, however, that the 60 geometry method cannot be used for paints having a 60 gloss lower than 30 units. 2 Two procedures are given in clause 5, the first (5.1) being for assessment of a film prepared from a liquid paint sample and the second (5.2) for assessment of an existing painted surface.

This International Standard specifies a method to determine if a flammable material such as a paint, varnish, paint binder, solvent, petroleum or a related product, when maintained at a selected equilibrium temperature and under the conditions of the test, gives off sufficient flammable vapour at this temperature to cause ignition on application of an external source of flame applied in a standard manner. The method is suitable for use over the temperature range 5 to 65 °C, although some of the apparatus listed in annex A cannot cover all of this range using the thermometer supplied with the apparatus. The procedure also makes allowance for deviations from standard atmospheric pressure.

1 This International Standard specifies a method for the determination of the flow time of paints, varnishes and related products that may be used to control consistency. A method for the adjustment of paints to the correct application consistency at the application temperature is described in the annex. 2 Three flow cups of similar dimensions, but having orifice diameters of 3, 4 and 6 mm, are specified. The method for their calibration is given. 3 The method is limited to testing materials for which the breakpoint of the flow from the orifice of the flow cup can be determined with certainty. This point is difficult to determine and reproduce for materials with flow times in excess of 100 s due to slowing-down effects.

This part of ISO 3856 specifies two methods for the determination of the lead content of the test solutions, prepared according to ISO 6713 or other suitable International Standards1). The methods are applicable to paints having "soluble" metal contents in the range of about 0,05 to 5 % (m/m). The flame atomic absorption spectroscopic (AAS) method Iclause 3) should be used as the reference method. Other methods can be used by agreement between the interested parties. If a spectrophotometric method is agreed, the dithizone method (clause 4) should be used. In case of dispute, the AAS method should be used.
