This European Prestandard contains guidelines for the preparation of manufacturers instructions for the installation, operation and maintenance of heat exchangers. It is only advisory and does not remove the manufacturers'/installers' responsibility to provide all necessary specific information to ensure the safe and efficient working of their equipment.

The aim of this European Prestandard 1s to establish a heat exchanger terminology so that consistent terms are used. For the purposes of this European Prestandard a heat exchanger 1s a device, the main function of which 1s to transfer heat between two fluids, with physical separation by a wall. Heat exchange between a fluid and a solid material (1n the case of ovens in particular) is therefore excluded.

This European Prestandard defines general terms and calculations used in determining performance of heat exchangers including related theory and general test procedure. This European Prestandard applies to heat exchangers classified according to the general arrangement of heat transfer specified by heat transfer surface types of ENV 247 subclause 4.1 and sub-clause 4.2. This European Prestandard applies when referenced by the various branch application standards. The specific application European (Pre)standards shall be the prime reference documents.

This European Prestandard describes the methods and accuracy of measurement for temperature, pressure, fluid quality and massflow of different fluids and how to determine the pressure drops across a heat exchanger. Measurements are restricted to those necessary for establishing the performance of heat exchangers classified in ENV 247 using the fluids listed in ENV 247. This European Prestandard applies when referenced by the various branch application standards. The specific application European (Pre)standards shall be the prime reference doucments.
