This part of ISO 5667 provides guidance on the design of sampling programmes and the choice of instrumentation and techniques for the sampling of the quality of wet deposition. It does not cover measurement of the quantity of rain. This part of ISO 5667 does not cover dry deposition or other types of wet deposition such as mist, fog and cloudwaters, since their measurements are still at research stages. However, their importance should be noted, since research results suggest that, in some cases their loading can be comparable with, or exceed, wet precipitation. Therefore, wet precipitation data alone are rarely sufficient for calculating total loadings. The main objectives are outlined in 1.1 and 1.2. 1.1 Control of local emissions Determination of loadings (i.e. mass/area/time) by wet deposition to a particular ecosystem requires information on emissions, transformation and transport of pollutants from point or area sources. This information, together with assessment of the relative loadings from distant and local sources, when combined with studies on the effects of the pollutant on the ecosystem, can be used to arrive at acceptable emission control regulations. 1.2 Long range transport of airborne pollutants Determination of temporal and spatial variations in the constituents of precipitation on a regional scale requires that the stations which are selected are representative, and are remote from local point or area sources.

This part of ISO 5667 sets out the general principles for, and provides guidance on, the design of sampling programmes and sampling techniques for all aspects of sampling of water (including waste waters, sludges, effluents and bottom deposits). It does not include detailed instructions for specific sampling situations, which are covered in the various other parts of ISO 5667. Also, it does not include microbiological sampling, which is covered in ISO 19458 [23].

This part of ISO 5667 is applicable to the sampling of suspended solids for the purpose of monitoring and investigating freshwater quality, and more particularly to flowing freshwater systems such as rivers and streams. Certain elements of this part of ISO 5667 can be applied to freshwater lakes, reservoirs, and impoundments; however, field sampling programmes can differ and are not necessarily covered here.

This part of ISO 5667 gives practical guidance on sampling, pretreatment, performance and evaluation of waters in the context of biotesting. Information is given on how to cope with the problems for biotesting arising from the nature of the water sample and the suitability of the test design. It is intended to convey practical experience concerning precautions to be taken by describing methods successfully proven to solve or to circumvent some of the experimental problems of biotesting of waters. Reference has been made as far as possible to existing International Standards and guidelines. Information taken from published papers or oral communication is utilized as well. Primarily dealt with are substance-related problems concerning sampling, pretreatment and preparation of water samples for biotesting and treatment of samples during the test, especially when performing tests with waters and waste waters containing unstable or removable ingredients. Basic principles of quality assurance, evaluation of data and presentation of results are outlined. Special emphasis is laid on ecotoxicological testing with organisms ('single-species biotests'). Some features addressed in this general guidance apply as well to biodegradation and/or bioaccumulation studies as far as sampling and sample preparations is concerned. Preparation of poorly soluble substances and testing beyond the water-solubility limit is also addressed. This part of ISO 5667 is not applicable to bacteriological examination of water. Appropriate methods are described in other International Standards.

This part of ISO 5667 establishes principles, basic requirements, and illustrative methods for dealing with the use of sample data for decision making based on the assessment of the confidence that water quality: a) meets targets and complies with thresholds; b) has changed; and/or c) lies in a particular grade in a classification system. This part of ISO 5667 also specifies methods for preliminary examination of the sensitivity of decisions to error and uncertainty, although it does not cover the full range of statistical techniques. This part of ISO 5667 provides general advice on decision making related to constraint formulation for expression of thresholds and targets and the form and scale of sampling programmes. NOTE 1 In the water industry, “standard” is commonly used to indicate the value or limit of a parameter of interest. However, in this part of ISO 5667, the term “threshold” is used to avoid confusion with published national, regional, and International Standards. NOTE 2 This document is framed in terms of sampling and measurement of chemical concentrations, in particular those subject to strong day-to-day temporal variations. The principles apply, however, to any item estimated by sampling which is subject to random error, including microbiological and biological data, and data subject to strong spatial variations.

This part of ISO 5667 provides guidance on the sampling of sedimentary materials from — inland rivers and streams; — lakes and similar standing bodies; and — estuarine and harbour areas. Industrial and sewage works sludges, palaeolimnology sampling and open ocean sediments are specifically excluded although some techniques may apply to these situations. Sampling specifically for the measurement of rates of deposition, other transport criteria and detailed strata delineation is not within the scope of this part of ISO 5667. The investigation may have the following objectives: — the descriptive mapping of an area; — the monitoring at regular intervals of fixed markers such as buoys; — examining the quality of dredger spoil; and — fundamental research.

This part of ISO 5667 establishes general requirements for sampling, preservation, handling, transport and storage of all water samples including those for biological analyses. It is not applicable to water samples intended for microbiological analyses as specified in ISO 19458, ecotoxicological assays, biological assays, and passive sampling as specified in the scope of ISO 5667-23. This part of ISO 5667 is particularly appropriate when spot or composite samples cannot be analysed on site and have to be transported to a laboratory for analysis.

This part of ISO 5667 provides guidance on the selection and use of various quality assurance and quality control techniques relating to the manual sampling of surface, potable, waste, marine and ground waters. NOTE The general principles outlined in this part of ISO 5667 might, in some circumstances, be applicable to sludge and sediment sampling.
