This part of IEC 60534 defines the testing and reporting of the step response of control valves that are used in throttling closed-loop control applications. A control valve consists of the complete, ready-to-use assembly of the control valve body, the actuator, and any required accessories. The most probable accessory is a valve positioner. NOTE For background, refer to technical report ANSI/ISA-TR75.25.02 [6]1. The object of this standard is to define how to test, measure, and report control valve response characteristics in an open-loop environment. This information can be used for process control applications to determine how well and how fast the control valve responds to the control valve input signal. This standard does not define the acceptable control valve performance for process control nor does it restrict the selection of control valves for any application. If this standard is used for evaluation or acceptance testing, the parties may agree to documented variations from these requirements. The information using the defined test methods is specifically applicable to closed-loop feedback control but may have some application to open-loop control applications. It does not address valves used in on-off control service. Tests specified in this standard may not be sufficient to measure the performance required for all applications. Not all control valve applications will require this testing.

This part of IEC 60534 specifies face-to-face (FTF) and centre-to-face (CTF) dimensions for given nominal sizes and pressure ratings of flanged, two-way, globe-type, straight pattern and angle pattern control valves. The nominal sizes included are DN 15 to DN 400 for straight pattern control valves and DN 25 to DN 400 for angle pattern control valves.

This part of IEC 60534 is intended to permit a variety of positioning devices, which respond to a rotary motion, to be mounted on the actuator of a control valve, either directly or by employing an intermediate mounting bracket. This standard is applicable where interchangeability between actuators and positioners is desired. a) The standardized mounting in this standard defines the interface between the positioner and a part of the actuator having a rotary movement proportional to the control valve travel. b) This standard also covers the direct connection between the positioner feedback and the shaft (or its axial extension) of a rotary control valve. In such cases, the feedback rotation is coincident with the valve angular travel. c) The standardized mounting applies to those rotary actuators in which the rotary part mentioned in item a) has a maximum travel of 90°. Such a travel is coincident with the valve travel when a direct connection (see item b)) is performed. d) The standardized mounting is divided into two options. Figure 1 shows the basic design and defines the minimum requirements an actuator must fulfill to adapt most common positioners. The universal design in figure 2 offers more variations of positioner adaptation and positioner feedback connection. The positioner manufacturer should state which mounting design is required.

1.1 This Standard applies to manual lever operated gas shut-off valves, sizes NPS ¼ inch to 8 inch, of metallic construction with welded, or flanged, or threaded ends other than pressure lubricated designs for use with natural gas, manufactured gas, and liquefied petroleum gases (distributed as vapour with or without the admixture of air), or mixtures thereof that are suitable for use between service temperatures of -60 °C to 180 °C (-76°F to 356°F) over a pressure range of 0 to 860 kPa (125 psig) and that withstand field pressure testing to a maximum permissible pressure of 1290 kPa (187 Psig). Notes: 1) Valves covered by this Standard may be used on “digester gas” (methane produced during sewage treatment), but because of entrained contaminants their use is to be subject to agreement between the manufacturer and the purchaser. 2) Valves covered by this Standard may not be used on “sour gas” (gas with entrained hydrogen sulphide) without modification(s). Manufacturers should be consulted for their recommendation(s). 1.2 All valves covered by this Standard will be limited as to the service temperature and/or special provisions in accordance with the following designations and descriptions in Clauses 5 through 9. Clause 5 -30 °C to 65 °C (-22°F to 149°F) Clause 6 -40 °C to 65 °C (-40°F to 149°F) Clause 7 -60 °C to 65 °C (-76°F to 149°F) Clause 8 -30 °C to 120 °C (-22°F to 248°F) Clause 9 -30 °C to 180 °C (-22°F to 356°F) 1.3 All references to psi (kPa) throughout this Standard are considered as gauge pressure unless otherwise specified. 1.4 This Standard contains SI (Metric) units corresponding to the yard/pound quantities, the purpose being to allow the standard to be used in SI (Metric) units. (IEEE/ASTM SI 10, American National Standard for Metric Practice, or ISO 80000-1:2009, Quantities and units – Part 1: General, is used as a guide in making metric conversion from yard/pound quantities.) This part of IEC 61514 specifies design reviews and tests intended to measure and determine the static and dynamic performance, the degree of intelligence and the communication capabilities of single-acting or double-acting intelligent valve positioners. The tests may be applied to positioners which receive standard analogue electrical input signals (as specified in IEC 60381) and/or digital signals via a data communication link and have a pneumatic output. An intelligent valve positioner as defined in Clause 3 is an instrument that uses for performing its functions digital techniques for data processing, decision-making and bi-directional communication. It may be equipped with additional sensors and additional functionality supporting the main function. The performance testing of an intelligent valve positioner needs to be conducted with the positioner mounted on and connected to the actuator/valve assembly the positioner is to be used on. The specific characteristic parameters of these combinations such as size, stroke, friction (hysteresis), type of packing, spring package and supply pressure for the pneumatic part, should be carefully chosen and reported, since the performance of a positioner is greatly dependent on the used actuator. The methods of evaluation given in this standard are intended for testing laboratories to verify equipment performance specifications. The manufacturers of intelligent positioners are urged to apply this standard at an early stage of development. This standard is intended to provide guidance for designing evaluations of intelligent valve positioners by providing: – a checklist for reviewing their hardware and software design in a structured way; – test methods for measuring and qualifying their performance under various environmental and operational conditions; – methods for reporting the data obtained. When a full evaluation, in accordance with this standard, is not required or possible, the tests which are required should be performed and the results should be reported in accordance with the relevant parts of this standard. In such cases, the test report should state that it does not cover the full number of tests specified herein. Furthermore, the items omitted should be mentioned, to give the reader of the report a clear overview. The standard is also applicable for non-intelligent microprocessor-based valve positioners without means for bi-directional communication. In that case an evaluation should be reduced to a limited programme of performance testing and a short review of the construction.

This International Standard specifies tests designed to determine the static and dynamic performance of single-acting or double-acting positioners. The tests may be applied to positioners which receive standard analogue input signals (as specified in IEC 60381 and IEC 60382) and have a pneumatic output. NOTE For positioners with pulsed or digital input signals, equivalent criteria may be applied. The methods described may not fully apply to positioners with digital controllers or positioners with pulsed outputs. Testing may be conducted either on a positioner alone, independently of an actuator, or on a positioner mounted and connected to a specific actuator, as a combined unit. The text makes clear where different approaches are required. The methods of evaluation given in this standard are intended for use by manufacturers to determine the performance of their products, and by users, or independent testing establishments, to verify manufacturers' performance specifications. The closest liaison should be maintained between the evaluating body and the manufacturer. Note should be taken of the manufacturer's specifications for the instrument when the test programme is being decided, and the manufacturer should be invited to comment on both the test programme and the results. His comments on the results should be included in any report produced by the testing organization. This standard is intended to provide definitions of positioner elements, actions, and characteristics, to specify uniform methods of measuring performance errors and effects of influence quantities on those characteristics, and to describe methods of reporting and evaluating the results of the measurement data obtained. The test conditions described in this publication (for example range of ambient temperatures and power supply) relate to conditions which commonly arise in use. Consequently, the values specified shall be used where no other values are specified by the manufacturer or user. If other values are used, they should be stated. It is recognized that the manufacturer's specifications and instructions for installation and operation should apply during all steps. The tests specified in this standard are not necessarily sufficient for instruments specifically designed for unusually arduous conditions. Conversely, a reduced series of tests may serve adequately for instruments designed to perform within a more limited range of conditions. When a full evaluation, in accordance with this standard, is not required or possible, those tests which are required should be performed and the results reported in accordance with the relevant parts of this standard. In such cases, the test report should state that it does not cover the full number of tests specified herein.

This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2004 and constitutes a technical revision. The significant changes with respect to the previous edition are: The standard has been optimized for usability and the test procedures have been reviewed regarding applicability for use in test facilities. Impractical test procedures were removed or modified.
