This document specifies, for flexible and rigid cellular polymeric materials, laboratory procedures which are intended to imitate the effects of naturally occurring reactions such as oxidation or hydrolysis by humidity. The physical properties of interest are measured before and after the application of the specified treatments. Test conditions are only given for open cellular latex, both open- and closed-cell polyurethane foams, and closed-cell polyolefin foams. Conditions for other materials will be added as required. The effect of the ageing procedures on any of the physical properties of the material can be examined, but those normally tested are either the elongation and tensile properties, or the compression or indentation hardness properties. These tests do not necessarily correlate either with service behaviour or with ageing by exposure to light. If desired, the ageing conditions contained in this document can be applied to composite structures containing any of the above types of cellular material. This can be helpful in the investigation of possible interactions between cellular materials and other substrates. Composite constructions can be in the form of complete finished products or representative small specimens cut there-from.

This document specifies the minimum requirements for flexible polyurethane foams up to and including 20 mm thick intended for combination with suitable substrates such as non-woven, woven or knitted fabrics, to form a laminate. Three types of flexible polyurethane foam are specified as follows: — type 1: polyether; — type 2: polyester with minimum elongation at break of 200 %; — type 3: polyester with minimum elongation at break of 300 %.

1.1 This test method covers the determination of the water absorption of rigid cellular plastics by measuring the change in buoyant force resulting from immersion under a 5.1-cm (2-in.) head of water for the specified immersion period of 96 h. 1.2 This test method describes two procedures that shall be used to measure the change in buoyant force. Procedure A shall be used for materials that either experience rapid water absorption or that show an increase in volume during the exposure period, or both. Materials that do not exhibit either of these characteristics shall be evaluated by Procedure B. 1.3 For specific applications, immersion periods varying from the normal 96-h test requirement shall be agreed upon between the manufacturer and the purchaser. 1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. 1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. 1.1 This specification covers faced or unfaced, rigid cellular phenolic thermal insulation. Boards shall be faced or unfaced. Tubular forms and board cut from a block or bun covered by this standard shall be unfaced. It does not apply to field expanded cellular phenolic materials. NOTE 1—If a facer or vapor retarder is to be used for the tubular form or board, then refer to Practice C921. 1.2 Materials covered by this specification are used as roof insulation; sheathing or rigid board for non-load bearing, building material applications; and pipe or board insulation cut from a block or bun for use between −40 and 257°F (−40 and 125°C). Type II and Type III materials with an appropriate vapor retarder covering on the warm surface are used to a lower temperature limit of −290°F (−180°C). (See 7.3.) 1.3 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.4 This specification covers closed cell rigid cellular phenolic thermal insulation manufactured using blowing agents with an ozone depletion potential of 0 (ODP 0). 1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use.
