1.1 Scope. 1.1.1* Applicability. This code shall apply to the storage, use, and handling of the following hazardous materials in all occupancies and facilities: (1) Ammonium nitrate solids and liquids (2) Corrosive solids and liquids (3) Flammable solids (4) Organic peroxide formulations (5) Oxidizer - solids and liquids (6) Pyrophoric solids and liquids (7) Toxic and highly toxic solids and liquids (8) Unstable (reactive) solids and liquids (9) Water-reactive solids and liquids (10)*Compressed gases and cryogenic fluids as included within the context of NFPA 55, Compressed Gases and Cryogenic Fluids Code 1.1.1.1 Occupancies. Unless otherwise specified in this code, all occupancy definitions and classifications shall be in accordance with the building code. 1.1.1.2 Multiple Hazards. Hazardous materials that are classified in more than one hazard category, as set forth in Section 4.1, shall conform to the code requirements for each hazard category. 1.1.2 Exemptions. 1.1.2.1 The quantity and arrangement limits in this code shall not apply to facilities that use ammonium perchlorate in the commercial manufacture of large-scale rocket motors. 1.1.2.2 This code shall not apply to the following: (1) Storage or use of hazardous materials for individual use on the premises of one- and two-family dwellings (2) Explosives or blasting agents, which are regulated by NFPA 495, Explosive Materials Code, and display fireworks, 1.3 G, which are regulated by NFPA1124, Code for the Manufacture, Transportation, Storage, and Retail Sales of Fireworks and Pyrotechnic Articles (3) Refrigerants and refrigerant oil contained within closed cycle refrigeration systems complying with the fire code and the mechanical code adopted by the jurisdiction (4) High hazard contents stored or used in farm buildings or similar occupancies and in remote locations for on premises agricultural use (5) Corrosive materials in stationary batteries utilized for facility emergency power or uninterrupted power supply, or similar purposes, in accordance with NFPA 1, Fire Code (6) Aerosols complying with NFPA 30B, Code for the Manufacture and Storage of Aerosol Products (7) Consumer fireworks, 1.4G complying with NFPA 1124, Code for the Manufacture, Transportation, Storage, and Retail Sales of Fireworks and Pyrotechnic Articles (8) Corrosive materials displayed in original packaging in mercantile occupancies and intended for personal or household use or as building materials (9) Flammable and combustible liquids having no other physical or health hazard properties covered by this code (10) Organic peroxide formulations that are capable of detonation either unpackaged or in their normal shipping containers under conditions of fire exposure, when in accordance with NFPA 495, Explosive Materials Code (11) Combustible metals, as defined in NFPA484, Standard for Combustible Metals (12) LP-Gas complying with NFPA 58, Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code or NFPA 59, Utility LP-Gas Plant Code (13) When approved, materials that have been satisfactorily demonstrated not to present a potential danger to public health, safety, or welfare, based upon the quantity or condition of storage.

This Standard applies to the preparation of SDSs and precautionary labeling for hazardous chemicalsused under occupational conditions. It presents basic information on how to develop and write SDSs andprecautionary labels. It also identifies information that must be included to comply with the HCS.Additional information is provided to help comply with state and federal environmental and safety lawsand regulations. Elements of this Standard may also be acceptable for international use. This Standardis not intended to address the distribution of SDSs.This Standard is not intended to provide a rote specification for complying with the HCS or any othergovernment requirements. Safety data sheet and precautionary labeling requirements and definitions aresubject to change. It is the responsibility of the SDS and label preparer to be aware of current HCSrequirements.This Standard must be applied in a manner consistent with all statutory and regulatory requirements,including the United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) HazardCommunication Standard (HCS; 29 CFR 1910.1200) and the substance specific standards (29 CFR1910.1001-1052).There are use-specific statutory and regulatory requirements for some chemical products that are outsidethe scope of OSHA HCS and therefore may have different SDS and/or labeling requirements. Someexamples include:? consumer products regulated by the Federal Hazardous Substances Act (FHSA),? medical products regulated by the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA),? pesticides regulated by the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA),? materials in transportation regulated by the Department of Transportation (DOT) HazardousMaterials Regulations, and? laboratory chemicals regulated under 29 CFR 1910.1450, the “OSHA Laboratory Standard”.See 29 CFR 1910.1200(b) for information on the scope and application of the HCS.For example, a company that manufactures aspirin tablets does not need to produce and distribute SDSsto individuals that are taking aspirin to treat pain or some other medical condition. This includes aspirintablets taken by a worker in the workplace. In this scenario, the aspirin would fall under the jurisdiction ofthe FDA, not OSHA. However, the company would be required to produce OSHA hazard communicationdocuments (such as an SDS and labels) for workers who may be exposed to aspirin powder during themanufacture of the tablets.It is not the intent of this Standard to substitute for specific regulatory requirements or to list each andevery unique requirement. Where there is a conflict between the applicable regulations and thisStandard, the regulations must take precedence over this Standard. References to the Code of FederalRegulations (CFR) in the Standard are to the January 1, 2009 edition of the CFR.

General8212;This guide contains information regarding the use of membrane technology to recover and concentrate hazardous materials that have entered surface and ground water as the result of a spill. Membrane technology may be applied alone or in conjunction with other treatment techniques, as follows: Different types of membrane are used in series with filters to treat highly contaminated solutions reaching concentration levels of several parts per million of organic and inorganic materials. Different types of membranes are applied in series to treat very dilute concentrations (parts per billion level) of organic and inorganic compounds. Each membrane type has the ability to remove specific compounds, thus producing a concentrated fraction. This fraction may require final off-site treatment but provides a significant reduction in transportation costs due to the large volume reduction achieved. Membranes may be used in conjunction with destruction technologies such as advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). This method is recommended for dilute solutions. The membrane technology portion concentrates the compounds to an optimum level for AOP destruction.1.1 This guide covers considerations for the use of membrane technology in the mitigation of dilute concentrations of spilled chemicals into ground and surface waters. 1.2 This guide addresses the application of membrane technology alone or in conjunction with other technologies. 1.3 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use.
