1.1 These requirements cover medium voltage power conversion equipment that controls and transfers power to motors. These requirements also cover power-supply modules, input/output modules, and electronic solid state switching devices, for use with power conversion equipment. 1.2 These requirements cover equipment rated 1501 volts to 15,000 volts. 1.3 This equipment has not been investigated for use in hazardous locations as defined by the National Electrical Code, NFPA 70. 1.4 These requirements do not cover solid state reduced voltage motor controllers (soft starters). 1.5 These requirements do not cover low voltage power conversion equipment rated 1500 volts and below. This type of equipment is covered by the Standard for Power Conversion Equipment, UL 508C.

This Standard specifies requirements for the design and the erection of electrical power installations (stations) in systems with nominal voltages above 1 kV a.c. and nominal frequency up to and including 60 Hz, so as to provide for safety of persons and proper functioning of the installation. This Standard applies to indoor substations, generating stations, and fenced outdoor supply stations and substations (including supply substations on customer premises). For the purpose of interpreting this Standard, an electrical power installation is considered to be one of the following: (a) a substation, i.e., a closed electrical operating area in a transmission or distribution network; or (b) one or more generating station(s) located on a single site. The installation includes generators and transformers with all associated switchgear and all electrical auxiliary systems. Connections between generating stations located on different sites are excluded from the scope of this Standard. Connections between closed electrical areas (including substations) located on the same site are taken to be part of the installation, except where such connections form part of a transmission or distribution system. The electrical power installation includes, but is not limited to, the following equipment: – rotating electrical machines; – switchgear; – transformers and reactors; – converters; – cables; – lines; – wiring systems; – batteries; – capacitors; – earthing systems; – buildings and fences that are part of a closed electrical operating area; – associated protection, control, and auxiliary systems; and – large air-type core reactors. Note: In general, a Standard for an item of equipment takes precedence over this Standard. This Standard does not apply to the design and erection of any of the following: – overhead and underground lines between separate installations; – pad-mounted tamper-proof enclosed equipment installations; – underground distribution system installations; – pole-mounted installations; – electric railways (but not the substation feeding a railway system); – mining equipment and installations; – fluorescent lamp installations; – installations on ships and off-shore installations; – electrostatic equipment; – test sites; or – medical equipment, e.g., medical x-ray equipment. This Standard does not apply to the design of factory-built, type-tested switchgear for which separate Standards exist. The requirements for carrying out live working on electrical installations are beyond the scope of this Standard.
