This part of BS 8006 gives recommendations and guidance for stabilizing soil slopes and faces using soil nails. Other methods of stabilization using reinforced soil methods are given in BS 8006-1-2010 and both parts might be needed for complex structures. Additional considerations might be required for unusually loaded or high soil nailed slopes, or where they interface with other structures. Whilst BS EN 1997-1-2004 specifically excludes soil nailing, this standard is intended to harmonize the design approach of soil nailing with other geotechnical structures designed using BS EN 1997-1-2004 . The principal purpose of this standard is to provide design guidance, however, where knowledge of construction methodology is required for design purposes then appropriate paragraphs have been included. Construction guidance is given in execution standard BS EN 14490-2010 . At the time of preparation of this standard, CEN Technical Committee TC341 is drafting a standard covering the testing of soil nails.

This part of BS 8103 gives recommendations for the structural design of low-rise housing and covers the stability of the structure, site investigation and foundations and ground floor slabs used in the construction. Foundations comprising strip footings or trench fill founded in normal ground are the only type described. Low-rise housing comprises detached, semi-detached and terraced houses and flats (with not more than four self-contained dwelling units per floor accessible from one staircase), of not more than three storeys above ground intended for domestic occupation and of traditional masonry construction with timber roofs and floors of timber or concrete. For the purposes of this standard, additional habitable accommodation in the roof space constitutes a storey of the house. The recommendations also apply to certain single storey, non-residential buildings, e.g. domestic garages and annexes to residential buildings with a floor area not exceeding 36 m2. This standard does not include the design of basements but, providing the basement is of one level only and is designed to provide a firm platform at ground level, the provisions of this standard may apply to the superstructure. Proprietary housing systems and houses of timber, steel or concrete framed construction are not covered by this standard. The structural design recommendations described in this standard are not specifically intended to cover other considerations such as fire resistance, thermal and sound insulation, resistance to damp penetration and durability.

5.1 The cyclic triaxial test permits determination of the secant modulus and damping coefficient for cyclic axial loading of a prismatic soil specimen in hydrostatically consolidated, undrained conditions. The secant modulus and damping coefficient from this test may be different from those obtained from a torsional shear type of test on the same material. 5.2 The secant modulus and damping coefficient are important parameters used in dynamic, performance evaluation of both natural and engineered structures under dynamic or cyclic loads such as caused by earthquakes, ocean wave, or blasts. These parameters can be used in dynamic response analyses including, finite elements, finite difference, and linear or non-linear analytical methods.Note 1—The quality of the result produced by this standard is dependent on the competence of the personnel performing it, and the suitability of the equipment and facilities used. Agencies that meet the criteria of Practice D3740 are generally considered capable of competent and objective testing/sampling/inspection/etc. Users of this standard are cautioned that compliance with Practice D3740 does not in itself assure reliable results. Reliable results depend on many factors; Practice D3740 provides a means of evaluating some of those factors. 1.1 These test methods cover the determination of the modulus and damping properties of soils in either intact or reconstituted states by either load or stroke controlled cyclic triaxial techniques. The standard is focused on determining these properties for soils in hydrostatically consolidated, undrained conditions. 1.2 The cyclic triaxial properties of initially saturated or unsaturated soil specimens are evaluated relative to a number of factors including: strain level, density, number of cycles, material type, and effective stress. 1.3 These test methods are applicable to both fine-grained and coarse-grained soils as defined by the unified soil classification system or by Practice D2487. Test specimens may be intact or reconstituted by compaction in the laboratory. 1.4 Two test methods are provided for using a cyclic loader to determine the secant Young''s modulus (E) and damping coefficient (D) for a soil specimen. The first test method (A) permits the determination of E and D using a constant load apparatus. The second test method (B) permits the determination of E and D using a constant stroke apparatus. The test methods are as follows: 1.4.1 Test Method A—This test method requires the application of a constant cyclic load to the test specimen. It is used for determining the secant Young''s modulus and damping coefficient under a constant load condition. 1.4.2 Test Method B—This test method requires the application of a constant cyclic deformation to the test specimen. This British Standard contains recommendations and guidance for the application of reinforcement techniques to soils, as fill or in situ, and to other fills. The standard is written in a limit state format and guidelines are provided in terms of partial material factors and load factors for various applications and design lives. This code is to be read in conjunction with BS EN 1997-1:2004, NA to BS EN 1997-1:2004 and BS EN 14475:2006. BS EN 1997-1:2004 does not cover the design and execution of reinforced soil structures. The values of partial factors and load factors given in BS EN 1997-1:2004 have not been calibrated for reinforced soil structures. BS EN 1997-1:2004 is not for use in the design and execution of reinforced soil. The partial factors set out in BS 8006-1 cannot be replaced by similar factors in BS EN 1997-1:2004. The code is divided into eight sections. Section 1 identifies the scope, definitions and notation of the code. Section 2 describes the concepts and fundamental principles of reinforced soil. Section 3 provides recommendations for the use of materials where existing standards are available. Where materials are used that are not covered by existing standards or where known materials are to be used in ways not covered by existing standards Section 4 gives recommendations for the testing and approval of such materials. Sections 5 to 8 relate to design, construction and maintenance of walls and abutments, slopes and foundations. They include specific recommendations for characterization of the soils to be used and other factors affecting the design and performance of the structures. Emphasis is placed on quality control both with regard to the consistency of the properties of the fill and reinforcing materials and to the handling of the materials on site. In line with current practice the design methods described are based on limit state principles. The partial factors included are based on previous experience and have been calibrated to maintain consistency with current practice. The clauses are supplemented by a substantial list of references to enable the user to consider in greater depth the applications of the technique.
