This part of BS 5385 gives recommendations for the design, installation and maintenance of floor tiling using ceramic tiles and mosaics bedded on concrete, cement:sand screeds, timber, asphalt and existing hard floor finishes in normal conditions. For special conditions see BS 5385-4. The following flooring materials are not included: natural stone (granite, slate, marble, etc.) tiles and slabs of terrazzo, and composition blocks (see BS 5385-5). Individual floor tiles with a maximum facial surface area greater than 0.72 m2 and with length to width ratio exceeding 2:1, might require special bedding procedures in accordance with advice from tile or adhesive manufacturers. Tile fittings for use as skirting, step treads and channels are given in Annex A. NOTE Where the floor tiling installation needs to meet specific functional or environmental requirements, or to assist in counteracting potentially detrimental effects on the installation and/or the structure, see BS 5385-4. The special conditions described in BS 5385-4, for example, swimming pools, shower areas, etc., are given in Annex B. Recommendations for the design and laying of levelling screeds are given in Annex C. Reference is made to tiles bedded directly to a concrete base, but for the design and construction of concrete bases see BS 8204-1. Annex D contains a recommended method for assessing levels and surface regularity and Annex E is an informative annex providing guidance on the reduction of slip hazards.

This document applies to structures in regions of high seismic risk or to structures assigned to high seismic performance or design categories. It defines the minimum experimental evidence that can be deemed to satisfy the use of unbonded post-tensioned precast structural walls (shear walls) for bearing wall and building frame special reinforced concrete shear wall systems, as defined in ASCE/SEI 7-05, when those walls do not fully satisfy the intent of the prescriptive requirements of Chapter 21 of ACI 318-05. This document includes mandatory Acceptance Criteria and nonmandatory Commentary, and has been written in such a form that its requirements can be coordinated directly with the requirements for special precast structural walls in 21.8 of ACI 318-05. Among the subjects covered are requirements for the procedures that shall be used to design unbonded post-tensioned precast test modules and their configurations, as well as requirements for testing, reporting, and assessing satisfactory performance of the test modules. The references of the Commentary provide documentary evidence, additional to the references of Chapter 21 of ACI 318R-05, that support the acceptance criteria. Consistent with the approach of ACI 318, no comparison is made, either in the body of the Acceptance Criteria or Commentary, of research results for precast test modules satisfying ACI 318 with those for modules that, although not satisfying ACI 318, do satisfy the Acceptance Criteria. Such comparisons, both experimental and analytical, are available in the Commentary references. In this document, consistent with the format of ACI 318-05, the word “Section” is not included before a reference to a section of ACI 318-05. To more clearly designate a section in this document, however, the word “Section” is used before any reference to a section of this document. The section numbering for the Commentary is the same as that for the Standard, with numbers preceded by an “R” and the text in italics to distinguish them from the corresponding section numbers of the Standard.

3.1 Masonry units alone and within assemblages commonly fail in a tensile mode when loaded in compression to failure. These tensile stresses result from differences in modulus of elasticity and Poisson's ratio between the masonry unit and mortar. Additionally, the dissimilarity in behavior of the grout within cores of masonry units under load leads to tensile stresses in the units and results in a splitting failure. 3.2 This test method produces a line load along the bed surface of the masonry unit. The compressive load applied to the unit, imposed by means of bearing rods, results in a tensile stress distributed over the height of the unit for the split length of the unit. This test method can be conducted with the rod oriented either in the longitudinal direction or in the transverse direction of the bed face. The splitting tensile strength is calculated by the equation given in 7.1. 3.3 The test value provides an indicator of masonry-unit splitting tensile strength. Additionally, the presence of defects such as visible voids or impurities in masonry units may be revealed. 1.1 This test method covers the determination of the splitting tensile strength of masonry units. 1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

The procedure described in this test method is intended to determine the effects of freezing and thawing on concrete units in the presence of water or saline solution. The procedure is not intended to provide a quantitative measure to determine an expected length of service for a specific type of concrete unit. Note 28212;The testing laboratory performing this test method should be evaluated in accordance with Practice C 1093. Note 38212;Compressive strength and absorption tests should be performed on different but representative specimens. While compressive strength and absorption values by themselves have been shown by research to not be reliable indicators of durability, they have been shown to be good reference values for units manufactured from a given set of materials.1.1 This test method covers the resistance to freezing and thawing manufactured concrete masonry and related concrete units. Units are tested in a test solution that is either water or 3 % saline solution depending on the intended use of the units in actual service. Note 1 - Concrete masonry and related concrete units include units such as hollow and solid concrete masonry units, concrete brick, segmental retaining wall units, concrete pavers, and concrete roof pavers. This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

1.1 This specification covers hollow building brick and hollow facing brick made from clay, shale, fire clay, or mixtures thereof, and fired to incipient fusion. Four types of hollow brick in each of two grades and two classes are covered. In this specification the term hollow brick shall be understood to mean hollow clay masonry units whose net cross-sectional area (solid area) in any plane parallel to the surface, containing the cores, cells, or deep frogs, is less than 75 % of its gross cross-sectional area measured in the same plane (see ). This specification does not cover brick intended for use as paving brick (see Specification C 902).1.2 The property requirements of this standard apply at the time of purchase. The use of results from testing of brick extracted from masonry structures for determining conformance or nonconformance to the property requirements (Section ) of this standard is beyond the scope of this standard.1.3 Brick covered by this specification are manufactured from clay, shale, or similar naturally occurring substances and subjected to a heat treatment at elevated temperatures (firing). The heat treatment shall develop sufficient fired bond between the particulate constituents to provide the strength and durability requirements of this specification. (See "firing" and "firing bond" in Terminology C 43.)1.4 Hollow brick differ from unglazed structural clay tile (Specifications C 34 and C 212) and solid brick (Specifications C 62 and C 216). Hollow brick require greater shell and web thicknesses and higher minimum compressive strength than structural clay tile, but permit greater void area and lesser distance from exposed edge to core hole than solid brick. Therefore, environmental and structural performance may be different in elements constructed of hollow brick from those constructed of structural clay tile or solid brick.1.5 The text of this standard references notes and footnotes which provide explanatory material. These notes and footnotes (excluding those in tables and figures) shall not be considered as requirements of the standard.1.6 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as the standard.
