The theoretical maximum specific gravities and densities of bituminous paving mixtures are fundamental properties whose values are influenced by the composition of the mixture in terms of types and amounts of aggregates and bituminous materials. Maximum specific gravity is used (1) in the calculation of air voids in the compacted bituminous paving mixture, (2) in calculating the amount of bitumen absorbed by the aggregate, and (3) to provide target values for the compaction of paving mixtures. Note 18212;The quality of the results produced by this standard are dependent on the competence of the personnel performing the procedure and the capability, calibration, and maintenance of the equipment used. Agencies that meet the criteria of Standard Practice are generally considered capable of competent and objective testing/sampling/inspection/etc. Users of this standard are cautioned that compliance with Practice alone does not completely assure reliable results. Reliable results depend on many factors; following the suggestions of Practice or some similar acceptable guideline provides a means of evaluating and controlling some of those factors1.1 This test method covers the determination of the theoretical maximum specific gravity and density of uncompacted bituminous paving mixtures at 25°C [77°F]. 1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard. 1.2.1 Residual pressure measurements are shown in both the SI unit of kPa and the commonly used non-standard equivalent unit of “mm of Hg”. 1.2.2 Measurements of volume and mass are only given in SI units because they are the only units typically used in practice when performing this test method. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

The quality of the stripe is determined by the coefficient of retroreflected luminance, RL, and depends on the materials used, age, and wear pattern. These conditions shall be observed and noted by the user. Under the same conditions of illumination and viewing, larger values of RL correspond to higher levels of visual performance. Retroreflectivity of pavement (road) markings degrade with traffic wear and require periodic measurement to ensure that sufficient line visibility is provided to drivers. For a given viewing distance, measurements of RL made with a retroreflectometer having a geometry corresponding to that viewing distance are a good indicator of the visual ranking of material measured. As specified by CEN, the measurement geometry of the instrument is based on a viewing distance of 30 m, a headlight mounting height of 0.65 m directly over the stripe, and an eye height of 1.2 m directly over the stripe. It shall be the responsibility of the user to employ an instrument having the specified observation and entrance angles.1.1 This test method covers measurement of the retroreflective properties of horizontal pavement marking materials containing retroreflecting beads, such as traffic stripes and surface symbols, using a portable retroreflectometer that can be placed on the road delineation to measure the retroreflection at a prescribed geometry. Note 18212;The restriction to bead based materials is for the purpose of ensuring a sufficiently gradual optical response function (from points of the source aperture to points of the receiver aperture) to allow generous sized instrument source and receiver apertures. 1.2 The entrance and observation angles of the retroreflectometer affect the readings. As specified by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), the entrance and observation angles shall be 88.76° and 1.05°, respectively. 1.3 This test method is intended to be used for field measurement of pavement markings but may be used to measure the performance of materials on sample panels before placing the marking material in the field. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

The gradation (size distribution) of glass beads has a significant influence on the retroreflective efficiency of a pavement marking system. This test method is for the characterization of the gradation (size distribution) of glass beads for the purpose of compliance testing against standard specification for glass beads in pavement marking applications. While there are potential industrial applications for this test method beyond the measurement of gradation (size distribution) of glass beads for pavement markings, those are beyond the scope of this standard.1.1 This test method covers the determination of the gradation (size distribution) of glass spheres used in pavement marking systems using a Flowing Stream Digital Analyzer. Typical gradations for pavement marking systems are defined in ranges from Type 0 through 5 in AASHTO M247-08. 1.2 This test method provides for the presentation of the size data in a variety of formats to the requirements of the agency pavement marking material specification. For most specifications the standard format is to present the size data as “Percent Retained” or “Percent Passing” relative to a series of standard US sieve sizes. 1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
