A TICS architecture is a framework for TICS deployments. It is a high level description of the major elements and the interconnections among them. It provides the framework around which the interfaces, specifications and detailed TICS systems designs can be defined. A TICS Architecture is not a product design, nor a detailed specification for physical deployment, and it is not specific to any one location. The title 'Systems Architecture' is perhaps the closest general terminology, but that term is sometimes too specific to include the conceptual aspects included in the terminology 'TICS Architecture' and also often implies a location specific solution. The purpose of a TICS Architecture is to maximise efficiency, interoperability and multimodality of multiple interacting TICS systems in a complex and developing sector. This part of ISC7TR 14813 defines a) Terminology to be used when documenting or referencing aspects of architecture description in TICS standards. b) The form in which aspects of System Architecture are to be documented and described in TICS standards. In compiling this part of ISC/TR 14813, the authors have assumed that contemporary systems engineering practices are used. Such practices are not defined within this part of ISC/TR 14813.

This part of ISO/TR 14813 provides definitions of the fundamental informational products or services or applications areas provided to a TICS user. These are described as "TICS Fundamental Services". This part of ISO/TR 14813 identifies 32 TICS fundamental services. If further fundamental services are subsequently identified as the sector develops, it is the intention that this part of ISO/TR 14813 shall be revised to include them. This part of ISO/TR 14813 is applicable to the Working Groups of ISO/TC 204 and other TCs who are developing standards for the TICS sector and associated sectors whose boundaries cross into the TICS sector (such as urban light railways, intermodal freight and fleet. This part of ISO/TR 14813 is designed to provide information and explanation to those developing TICS Standards and to those developing specifications, implementations and deployments for Transport Information and Control Systems. This part of ISO/TR 14813 is in itself, by its nature, advisory and informative. It is designed to assist the integration of services into a cohesive Reference Architecture, assist interoperability and common data definition.

ISO 14906:2004 specifies the application interface in the context of Electronic Fee Collection (EFC) systems using the Dedicated Short-Range communication (DSRC). The EFC application interface is the EFC application process interface to the DSRC Application Layer. ISO 14906:2004 is applicable to the EFC attributes (i.e. EFC application information); the addressing procedures of EFC attributes and (hardware) components (e.g. ICC and MMI); EFC application functions, i.e. further qualification of actions by definitions of the concerned services, assignment of associated ActionType values and content and meaning of action parameters; the EFC transaction model, which defines the common elements and steps of any EFC transaction; the behaviour of the interface so as to ensure interoperability on an EFC-DSRC application interface level. This is an interface standard, adhering to the open systems interconnection (OSI) philosophy (ISO/IEC 7498-1), and it is, as such, not concerned with the implementation choices to be realised at either side of the interface. ISO 14906:2004 provides security-specific functionality as place holders (data and functions) to enable the implementation of secure EFC transactions. Yet the specification of the security policy (including specific security algorithms and key management) remains at the discretion and under the control of the EFC operator, and hence is outside the scope of ISO 14906:2004.
