The primary objective of this document is to describe the systematic and random measurement uncertainties which may be expected when testing gas turbine engines in a range of different test facilities. The documentation covers a traditional method for estimating pretest uncertainties and a new method for computing and comparing posttest uncertainties. To determine these posttest uncertainties, data generated during the AGARD Uniform Engine Test Program (UETP) were analyzed and compared to the pretest estimates. The proposed procedure provides a mechanism for determining the expected accuracy of test results obtained from facilities which were not previously cross calibrated. Furthermore, the method can be used to assist in making cost-effective management decisions on the level of validation/cross calibration necessary when bringing a test facility on line. This document is also intended to act as a guide for improving uncertainty analyses in a broad spectrum of related industries. Measurement uncertainty and measurement system approaches and practices for the UETP are presented in a systematic format. Readers can use these uncertainty approaches and practices for comparison to their own measurement systems. The approach chose was to analyze three of the UETP test conditions at eight test facilities along with the individual measurement system approaches and practices. The test program provided a wide range of performance measurements and corresponding pretest uncertainty estimates encompassing a variety of test and measurement approaches and practices. Included in the analysis are the basic gas turbine performance measurements of temperature, pressure, airflow, fuel flow, area, speed, thrust, and typical performance parameter functions and associated uncertainty estimates.

Engines subject to dust, industrial pollution, saltwater contamination or other chemically laden atmosphere (including pesticies and herbicides) lose performance due to deposits of contaminants on surfaces in the air/gas flow path. Engine wash and engine rinse procedures are utilized to restore turbine engine performance. These procedures are generated by the engine manufacturer and are included in the Engine Maintenance/Service Manuals. For most turbine engines these procedures are similar in concept and practice; however, application details choice of solvents and many other service features can vary from engine manufacturer to engine manufacturer and may even vary within the range of engine models produced by any manufacturer. The intent of this SAE Aerospace Information Report (AIR) is to outline the general nature, considerations, and background of engine wash and engine rinse and is directed towards the needs of the entry level engineer, service engineer, and those involved in the general maintenance of installed turbine engines.

This International Standard specifies functional, di-mensional, structural and environmental requirements for the design of aircraft engine transport devices, used to transport aircraft engines in wide-body air-craft. These devices are intended to be used in con-junction with pallets compatible with ISO 8097 Class II restraint requirements. The restraint system parameters and requirements are also to be met for those devices where the pallet structural capability is an integral part of the design. Design parameters specified for air transport of engine transport devices should enable interline capability where feasible with respect to dimensions and loads. This International Standard specifies minimum air and ground handling features and is intended to ensure interchangeability and compatibility with present and future air transport and ground handling system. The devices specified herein should be designed primarily for air transport and alternatively for surface transport, stowage and maintenance purposes.
