Background data for Tubular Joint Design Rules in American Codes (API RP 2A and AWS D1.1-72) are reviewed in terms of static ultimate strength and fatigue. The problem of extension to high-cycle fatigue@ which becomes increasingly important in severe weather areas and/or deep water@ is explored.
