FOREWORD The following report. Removal of Particulate Matter from Gaseous Wastes: Filtration@ presents a compilation@ and critical evaluation where possible@ of information obtained from an exhaustive survey of the technical literature published on this subject. Information supplied by equipment manufacturers and users is also incorporated where pertinent. The purpose of this report is to supply an engineer concerned with dust collection problems with sufficient information@ both theoretical and practical@ to enable him to evaluate the use of filtration in a given situation. This report@ prepared in 1959 by William Licht@ Department of Chemical Engineering@ University of Cincinnati@ is one in a series of five sponsored by the American Petroleum Institute to cover the field of dust-collecting devices. The others are: 1. Cyclone Dust Collectors??prepared by Kaiser Engineers@ Division of Henry J. Kaiser Company@ 1955. 2. Electrostatic Precipitators??prepared by Chad F. Gottschlich@ Department of Chemical Engineering@ University of Cincinnati@ 1958. 3. Gravity@ Jnertial@ Sonic@ and Thermal Collectors??prepared by Chad F. Gottschlich@ Department of Chemical Engineering@ University of Cincinnati@ 1959. 4. Wet Collectors??prepared by Nathan Gilbert@ Department of Chemical Engineering@ University of Cincinnati@ 1959. Those reports prepared at the University of Cincinnati were the result of an arrangement between the Committee on Disposal of Refinery Wastes@ Division of Refining@ of the American Petroleum Institute and The Ketteringr Laboratory@ Department of Preventive Medicine and Industrial Health@ College of Medicine@ of the University@ under the general supervision of Jacob Choiak of The Kettering Laboratory. The Department of Chemical Engineering@ College of Engineering@ of the University@ was designated as the agency to prepare the reports.
