FOREWORD This review of technical literature and compilation of abstracts has been prepared as a guide to references for the use of research investigators and designers in the field of oil-burning equipment. Renewed industry interest in research and development@ brought about by the research plans of the Fuel Oil Committee of the American Petroleum Institute has revealed a need for a guide to technical literature relating particularly to distillate fuel-oil combustion for residential heating equipment and similar low-capacity oil-fired applications. The API Fuel Oil Committee@ in conducting a study of the research needs of the oil-heating industry as a basis for formulating a continuing industry-wide oil-burner research program@ has placed initial emphasis on (1) research needed for the development of improved and lower cost oil burners of 10v capacity and (2) means for the improvement of technical communications within the industry. In the course of visits and discussions with various organizations in the oil-heating industry@ it has become evident that there is need for broader awareness of research data already available and for published information on the art. This special need is due@ in part@ to the fact that literature in this field appears sporadically and in widely diverse publications. Moreover@ there is no single journal or abstract service which provides complete coverage of the literature in the technical fields of interest to those involved in research and development on oil-burning equipment. This review is@ thus@ a preliminary and a partial step in fulfilling this need expressed by representatives from many segments of the oil-heating industry.
