Introduction: The materials tested in this study were those which had been submitted previously by the American Petroleum Institute for testing by the dominant lethal and cytogenetic tests. The liver-activated bacterial assay is a refinement of the standard procedure and introduces an important aspect of mammalian metabolism into the in vitro test.
