Foreword: In its API Highway Policy Statement@ the Board of Directors is on record favoring sound legislative provisions for motor vehicle inspection at state-licensed@ privately operated facilities. This position was adopted as being in the public interest@ and in recognition of the fact that such inspection programs contribute measurably to improved traffic safety. Because oil companies@ and service station dealers who operate inspection stations@ have had valuable practical experience in those states which already have compulsory motor vehicle inspection@ they are in a position to make these recommendations. The Service Station Advisory Committee issued a questionnaire in February@ 1967 to seek out the recommendations of these experienced and qualified observers. This document represents a consolidation of the returns to this questionnaire@ and has been carefully reviewed and approved by the Service Station Advisory Committee.
