UL Standard for Safety Energy Management Equipment - Section/Paragraph Reference: New Supplement SA Subject: Requirements for Smart Grid Enabled Equipment (Edition 4: December 17@ 2007)
"These requirements apply to non-industrial Energy Management Equipment intended to receive and respond to communication signals or data relating to power billing rate or demand response. Equipment covered by SA1.1 are commonly identified as ""smart"" or ""smart enabled"" and are intended to interact with equipment (e.g. appliances@ lighting) and the ""Smart Grid"" described by the US Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007. This does not exclude from the Scope of this Supplement SA those equipment that interact with other communication networks not identified as ""Smart Grid."" These requirements do not address the integrity of any output signal or data or interoperability with other equipment. These requirements supplement those specified in the Standard for Energy Management Equipment@ UL 916. These requirements are applicable to energy management equipment@ including dimming of lighting and light or presence-sensors. Those features shall additionally comply with the requirements of@ the Standard for Solid-State Dimming Controls@ UL 1472 and the Standard for Nonindustrial Photoelectric Switches for Lighting Control UL 773A@ as appropriate. These requirements do not apply to communication network devices that control appliances or lighting via simple power on-off@ building wiring devices@ panelboard mounted devices@ utility meters and similar non-portable devices."
