ESDU 92038 gives equivalent lengths that may be used in place of the true length in the Euler buckling equation for a uniform section strut pinned at both ends@ so taking account of end conditions and loading type in the assessment of the buckling load of practical struts having initial bow and offset loading. The equivalent lengths are provided for a wide range of end conditions for uniform section struts@ struts tapered continuously or tapered at both ends with a uniform section centre portion. They are also given for struts with an intermediate support at which the strut is pinned and there may also be a step section change@ and for struts with an intermediate elastic support.. The loadings include simple end loads and axially distributed loadings that vary linearly or to a power law; they may be conservative (fixed in direction) or non-conservative (tangential to the strut axis). Non-conservative distributed loads that are reacted by a conservative load at one or both ends are also included. The special case of a cantilevered uniform section strut that is clamped and has a direct loading inclined to the strut axis acting through a point on the neutral axis is treated. The equivalent length for dynamic buckling under a non-conservative loading is also given.
