This standard specifies requirements for two types of disinfectant based on quaternary ammonium compounds intended for use on inanimate surfaces. The standard is intended for the evaluation of disinfectants based on quatenary ammonium compounds for general use. Quaternary ammonium compounds are organically substituted ammonium compounds in which the nitrogen compound has a valence of five. Four of the substituent radicals are alkyl or heterocyclic radicals and the fifth is an ion. Examples include cetrimide, benzalkonium chloride and benzethonium chloride.
NOTE 1 Using this specification, it is not possible to determine the bactericidal activity of the undiluted product. Some dilution is always produced by the addition of inoculum, standard hard water and sterile skimmed milk.
NOTE 2 If a product complies with the test requirements, it can be considered to be bactericidal, but it should not necessarily be inferred that the product is a suitable disinfectant for a defined purpose.
