This International Standard specifies requirements for an environmental management system that an organization can use to improve its environmental performance. This standard can be used by organizations seeking to manage their environmental responsibilities in a systematic manner, thereby contributing to the "environmental pillar" of sustainability. This International Standard helps an organization achieve the intended outcomes of its environmental management system, which deliver value to the environment, the organization itself and interested parties. The expected results of the environmental management system consistent with the organization's environmental policy include: --enhancement of environmental performance; --fulfillment of compliance obligations; --achievement of environmental objectives. This International Standard is applicable to organizations of any size, type and nature, and applies to those environmental aspects of activities, products and services that an organization can control or can influence based on a life cycle perspective. This standard does not propose specific environmental performance criteria. This International Standard can be used in whole or in part to systematically improve environmental management. However, an organization can only claim conformity to this International Standard when all requirements of this International Standard are included in the organization's environmental management system and are fully met.
