1. This series of standards defines a set of common facilities used to assist in providing security services in application layer protocols. They include: a) a set of notational tools to support the specification of select field protection requirements in abstract syntax specifications, and to support security exchange and security transformation specifications; b) service definitions for Application Service Elements (ASE), protocols The specification and PICS proforma that support security services provided within the application layer of OSI; c) the specification and PICS proforma of the security transfer syntax associated with the presentation layer that supports security services in the application layer. 2. This standard defines the services provided by Security Exchange Service Elements (SESE). The SESE is an ASE that allows communication of secure information to support the provision of security services within the application layer.
