Scope
This standard defines a data management reference model. It establishes a framework for harmonizing existing and future standards for managing persistent data in information systems. See Appendix A for existing data management standards. This International Standard defines common terms and concepts applicable to all data in information systems. These concepts are used to more specifically define the services provided by particular data management components such as database management systems or data dictionary systems. These service-related definitions identify multiple interfaces that may be the subject of future standardization. This standard does not specify the services and protocols for database management. It is neither a specification for system implementation nor a basis for evaluating implementation consistency. This International Standard covers processes related to the handling of persistent data and the interaction of those processes that are specific to the requirements of a particular information system. Including public data management services required by applications such as definition, storage, retrieval, update, maintenance, backup, recovery, communication, and dictionary data. This International Standard addresses data management standards, including distributed database management services, located on one or more computer systems. This standard does not cover common services normally provided by operating systems, such as those processes related to specific types of physical storage devices, specific technologies for storing data, and specific details of communications and human-machine interfaces. The data management standard defines the services provided on the interface. It places no restrictions on how the process is implemented.
