Scope
This guiding technical document defines the data management reference model. It establishes a framework for harmonizing existing and future standards for managing persistent data in information systems. See Appendix A for existing data management standards. This technical guidance document defines common terms and concepts related to all data held in information systems. These concepts are used to more specifically define the services provided by particular data management components such as database management systems or data dictionary systems. The interfaces specified by these service-related definitions can be the subject of future standardization. This technical guidance document does not specify services and agreements for data management. This document is neither an implementation specification for various systems, nor is it a basis for assessing the compliance of implementations. Some of the processes included in the scope of this guidance technical document relate to the handling of persistent data and their interaction with processes that are specific to the requirements of a particular information system. This includes common data management services such as those required to define, store, retrieve, update, maintain, backup, restore and communicate applications and dictionary data and communicate with it. The scope of this guidance technical document takes into account the standards for data management on one or more computer systems, including services for distributed database management. The scope of this guidance technical document does not include common services typically provided by operating systems, such as processes related to specific types of physical storage devices, specific technologies for storing data, and specific details of communications and human-machine interfaces. The data management standard defines the services provided on the interface. There is no restriction on how the process is implemented.
